Now that our freedom of movement has been lifted slightly I’d be grateful to know where is a good place to park, walk to and/or stand in order to watch the horses exercise of a morning in Lambourn. I’ll obviously be keeping my distance, just keen to know anywhere that the public might be able to view.

I'll answer this, but in doing so I'm ignoring all politics and the issue of whether it's a good idea or not at the moment. Maybe this advice is to cut out and keep for later in the year. Lambourn's not like Warren Hill in Newmarket, say, where there are always loads of horses about, and plenty of car parking. Additionally, it's not very easy to find your way about. And bear in mind that it's all private land, not a theme park! However, if you head out of the village on the Wantage Road, towards Wantage, once you have passed Faringdon Place (Charlie Hills' on the left) and start to head uphill, there are gallops on both the left and right hand side of the road. One side is C Hills' and the other side is N Henderson's. (Although the latter won't have many horses 'in' and/or doing much at this time of year.) You may have to time it right, but if you do, the view will be worth it. Another option is the Jockey Club all-weather, off Maddle Road. This is in Upper Lambourn (past the Malt Shovel pub) rather than Lambourn itself. Lots of trainers use this. Third thing to say - a big feature of Lambourn is the 'bowl' and the Mandown Gallops, with the schooling fences. Not very easy to get to though, unless you're on a horse, and not much schooling going on at this time of year! But I'd be staying in and staying safe, myself.... |
