Premier league footballers.

Come the resumption ,the fanatics will still be paying a fortune to watch them at whatever day and time television says so.

I would hope that people will walk away from the sport at this level in disgust.....but they wont.

sixtwosix, I wouldnt be so sure. Who could justify now spending a fortune going to football and paying to watch it on TV. Life has changed forever.

If they were all furloughed, would they get £2500 a month each, less 40% tax? It wouldn’t cost a fortune in the grand scheme of things, and it would be a fantastic ‘fook you’ to every player!

Couldn't agree less with the OP.

Why should footballers have to bail everybody out? If it was mandatory for anyone earning say a six figure sum, then that's fine, but to target and highlight one specific group is nonsense. And plenty of footballers have voluntarily taken pay cuts/freezes and/or made large donations already.

The problem is not so much them but the ordinary people who put them on a pedestal and idolise them.

The days when they answered to the community are long gone. The wealth means they distance themselves in a similar way to the aristocracy.

I would like to see the proof that plenty of them have taken pay cuts. It strikes me that they appear to only respond when a camera is put in front of them.

Johnny Mustang,I agree that, not everyone in this country who is on a VERY BIG wage are taking a pay cut but the premier league footballers must be the largest single group. Do they have to wait for everyone else on a big wage to take a pay cut, can't they do it off their own backs, This would look a let better that if it was forced on them.

Let them keep their big salaries as long as they are paying tax etc ,that's worth more to the economy than cutting their cash.

What they need to do as a squad is donate some money to the NHS etc .

Premier League footballers are such an easy target and it was wrong for Hancock to call them out in that way.

I'm pretty certain they will do something but it takes time to organise a collective response from such a large group.

Tottenham's owner Joe Lewis is worth about £4.5 billion and is a tax exile. He could in all likelihood pay the non-football staff his club for six months with what he spends on his weekly shop. So for him to claim a government bailout is disgusting.

Yes I do think Premier League footballers should be contributing, most already do a lot that is not seen or  advertised, but better to let them keep their wages, which tax is paid on, and then they can make donations after tax to those in need.

But as I said, Premier League footballers are an easy target. Take aim at the mega wealthy, the tax  dodgers, hedge fund managers, those who are actually making money as stock markets crash.

Very short sighted by the football clubs if you were going to use the furloughed system then they should of got together and made an announcement that all premiership players were donating 10% of their wages to the NHS but the way they've done it looks like both the clubs and players don't care about the situation which imho is probably true for the 3 clubs what's done it.

Tbf there is a Cabinet Minister,who owns Hedge Funds based mainly outside the UK for tax purposes,who has probably made enough to make Alexis Sanchez look like a pauper.

The issue is not so much about top paid footballers take a pay cut when there working day is much reduced. The issue is not about clubs like Tottenham Hotspur & Newcastle furloughing low paid non-playing staff whose services are not currently required although 20% less for those workers and families affected might create terrible hardship.

The issue is citing financial profits/implosion as a reason for furloughing staff whilst at the same time fully paying highly paid footballers for what sitting on their backsides most of the day? IT IS MORALLY UNACCEPTABLE TO DO BOTH and as a tax payer I object. If some of the top players had their wages halved it would easily pay for non-playing staff wages.

For instance two weeks before Tottenham executed the measures, the club announced annual revenues of £460.7m and an operating profit of £63m. Newcastle too announced a profit of £19m for 2017-18. Only five Premier League clubs according to the most recent estimates are not funded or owned by a billionaire.

There will be a backlash, I already hate it every time Sky ramp my subscription and I know most of it is due to the cost of football.

its what happens after this crisis is over that matters,do we go back to slapping nhs staff or do we carry on clapping them,do we go back to the rich getting big pay rise's and the poor get the scraps and so on,after the 2008 crash we went back to doing the same,lets hope this time its different but dont hold your breath

Any idea's as to the marginal rate of tax being paid on their earnings?  Less than 40% for sure after various tax planning schemes are in place so loss to exchequer not that great.

If the bulk of the 'sacrifice' is merely a deferral then that is a total disgrace.

Laughable that they use Gary Lineker to defend them. A man who has taken BBC for a ride for years. Very few people can ever have been paid so much for so little. Has the nerve to trot out negative stuff about company directors etc., people who actually employ other people. Something footballers and Gary wouldn't know too much about.

People need to stop subscribing to Sky & BT Sports which funds this circus.

I heard Messi & Barca players taken a 70% cut. And he unlike most players does deserve big wages.

I have no issue with footballers being called out, but they also need to call out plenty of others professions/people who earn fortunes if they want to go down that route. What the clubs should be doing as a minimum is paying the extra 20% of the lower paid workers who have been furloughed by them, and not claiming financial difficulties whilst paying players 200 grand per week imo.
