Been having problems with Chrome and thought I would try Opera as it's very quick and efficient with other sites but I've never used it on here before. Everyone seems to use Firefox or Chrome as I have these days and I wondered if any had actually tried the Opera browser.

No. At the back of my mind there were problems with Opera being taken over by shady characters, although I do not recall any details. But good luck.

I'd be more concerned you are having problems with Chrome that other users do not. Have you ruled out:
1) bad cached content; 2) interference from extensions; 3) ancient version of chrome? |

Better still: avoid Chrome. Anything with the google label should be avoided unless there is absolutely no alternative. Whatever you do, do not open a google "account".

Thank you for your replies. I did have an up to date version of Chrome but the problem I am encountering is with the Forum which is deemed unsafe by many of the browsers and eventuallt gets blocked by them. Opera also has it's problems and I am now trying to persevere with Firefox.

I've played around with Opera, it's ok but I went back to Firefox. Currently trying out MS New Edge (based on Chromium engine), it seems solid enough.

I don't think you can use an adblocker with Edge which I would not be happy with.

I was originally with Firefox..but after experiencing quite a few crashes I moved to Chrome. Had no problems with Chrome for years bar a few loading(slow) issues when multi-tabbing. I was doing a ton of that a while back so for that reason I changed to Opera which ran just as smoothly but rated much higher for that particular task. Recently that browser had some sort of major "update" and after that it just never ran as smoothly again. It pissed me off to the point where I completely deleted it off my devices. I now use Chrome everywhere and have Edge as a never really used backup. The best thing to do is install all the major ones and play around in each of them. Testing them with tasks and routines you normally go through. It'll soon become clear which one you have preference for.
btw unless you're involved in criminal activity, I don't think you should be at all concerned about any privacy issues with any browser. Marketing is a RAGING BEAST in the online world.. |

Agree ProSniper - in principal with - 'nothing to hide' philosophy.
However - Also agree with earlier poster - jimmythewon - when he posts... 'Whatever you do, do not open a google 'account'... and that includes gmail, too. A google account is of no value to the user whatsoever - Yet an open invitation to google It is like leaving your house door open, and letting the neighbours, and everybody else, come in and rummage through your drawers and wardrobes. A simple must is to BLOCK 'Third-Party' Cookies on ALL Browsers - which is straightforward to do. That will keep practically all 'TRACKING COOKIES' OFF your computer - along with most of the other unwelcome Malware. |

I agree prosniper that it's best to experiment with them all but up until recently I was happy with Chrome. I then began to experience problems of access with the forum and continually getting warnings as to the security certificates of Betfair so I then decided to remove it. I installed Opera yesterday and set it up with all the bookmarks I wanted only to discover that the bookmarks had all disappeared today. Apparently it is a common problem with Opera at the moment.

I think the main reason people open a google account is to link it with their mobile phones but I agree it is a menace.

I agree looky. Rotten cookies and malware/spyware need to be kept under control. I find that regular sweeps with CCleaner + Superantispyware does a fine job of ridding any nuisances that have found their way in.
Aslo agree on the overall linking-data collecting. Any site that's prodding for more than your IP address is not to be encouraged. Social account sites that are demanding your personal phone number so as to "verify" your account("don't get locked out") etc is becoming absurd. |

Sparrow the forum was updated so you shouldn't get these problems now. When was this update Dave as up till Saturday I was still encountering problems which if anything were worse than it had ever been. |

sparrow - Are you accessing Betfair, and the Forum, by using old Bookmarks?
If so - Try deleting those Bookmarks - Then access the sites, and others, by, newly, typing the sites URL/Address in the Address Bar - Then Bookmark those new, fresh, accesses. |

hmmm very odd is there a padlock just to the left of the address? If you click on it what does it say?

onlooker, I was using the bookmark but then changed to the forum tab on the home page but it made no difference. So far Firefox has been fine but after using Chrome for so many years it came as a bit of a surprise to run into all these problems. I have deleted Opera and will now try Edge as a backup.

chrome can def by very shirty from time to time. On an old computer I use once in a blue moon, it won't even connect to google! It says the connection isn't secure.

Dave, on Firefox it says "Connection verified by a ticket issuer not recognised by Firefox" It goes on to say that Firefox does not recognise the issuer and it is verified by Kaspersky which is my security programme.

I meant on chrome - if you click on the padlock a box appears that says connection secure and certificate valid

Dave, I have deleted Chrome but from memory it said something about it being unsafe due to the certificate. It would start hanging if I hadn't used it for around 20 minutes and then eventually stopped working and I would have to start all over again.

As you are on WINDOWS then ... Since Windows7 (the best -ever Windows, that I am sticking with) then Micosoft SECURITY ESSENTIALS is part of the Operating System. From Windows8 (Awful, and very soon dropped by Microsoft) and on into Windows10 - Windows Security Essentials became - Windows DEFENDER - the same product. WINDOWS SECURITY ESSENTIALS - WINDOWS DEFENDER ... is all that you need It is built-into Windows and FREE... Updates the potential Virus and Malware List automatically and seamlessly every day, too NEVER, EVER - run TWO Firewalls/Anti Virus Protections TOGETHER. They constantly 'check each other out' - often 'recognising' each other as a type of Malware - then try to block each - and generally S L O W your computer down. Norton is notorious for that, and AVG another nightmare. DISABLE KASPERSKY - and see how you go on - better still - throw it away. -or - if you so wish - Disable Windows Defender - IF you have Kaspersky running the whole time... But - Do NOT run BOTH together. You have NO NEED for KASPERSKY whatsoever You are punter sparrow - on Betfair ... Not GCHQ. |

Have had Kaspersky for the past 10 years since I was a victim of debit card fraud. I thought I knew it all until that happened and it taught me a lesson. The Windows Firewall is automatically turned off by Kaspersky.

Unless - You try turning Kaspersky Off for a while - ENABLE the built-in WINDOWS Firewall, of course - and see how you go on with that opposite set-up for a period. |

birdy, I agree with looky. Windows Defender has gotten so solid that there's simply no need to run any other AV program. I had Avast running on all my cisterns for years but I recently uninstalled it and now solely rely on Windows Defender.

Kaspersky only costs around 50p per week and for peace of mind it's worth it. The debit card fraud cost me nothing as I soon spotted it and the money was returned but it caused a lot of inconvenience and was almost certainly began online.

It doesn't matter how cheap it is, it's doing no better of a job than countless other FREE programs will do. Of course I appreciate a lot of people stick with what they know. If you've been paying for particular program for years and remained hassle free..it's easy to convince yourself you mustn't change.

Brave is another option for a browser.....very fast, free from adds and you have an option to earn real money if that is your sort of thing.

Always used Chrome in recent years but tried Firefox again recently, do like it but uses more resources when compairing having 6 or 7 pages open in tabs hardly a deal killer. uBlock Origin is a must extention, soon makes the racing post site much cleaner as you can block the annoying banners. Not used Brave on Windows yet but use it on my phone and it does a great job blocking ads
