The year is 2020,yet oncourse bookmakers still use fractional odds on their boards, which I can assure them,as well they know, that the casual racegoer doesn't understand fractions, but would know that 3.5 is better than 3/1,and  1.25 is better than 1.1.
Exchange prices, which all books follow, are displayed in decimals and not fractions. We don't have 8 halfcrowns to the £ anymore!!
Using decimals would enable bookmakers to have closer price changes,so if a book didn't want to go 9/2 the 4/1 shot, they can attract business at 4.1,and the short priced ones can become 1.1, 1.2  1.3.  Much simpler for the customers, and,as stated it is 2020!

For decimal odds to work to work 9/2 is 5.5 and 4/1 is 5.0 evens is 2 etc.
However there is zero chance of oncourse bookmakers displaying odds that are more  open and attractive to their customers'
they would much rather confound them with 19/5 17/5 13/5 85/40 21/20 etc and everything in between

^ Odds on shots would look ridiculous on the racecourse.  Imagine showing a horse at 0.73!

5.1,5.2,5.3, 5.4,5.5 much more attractive than 4/1,or you have a line of books all displaying the same price 4/1 and one on the back row going 9/2. Give your customers the choice.

I remember years ago at Ascot jeff Banks going decimal for the day,
he was back to normal the next day I think h said the punters did not want decimal betting.
have a good day

Ronnie.

Not a proper experiment if ONLY 1  book participates, and you got the impression they didn't want it to work.
Anyone that thinks a customer understands fractions better than decimals doesn't know their punters very well.
Jmdc, why would it be ridiculous showing odds at under 1,like you stated at .73? Customers would know that £10 wins £7.30,far easier than trying to explain what 8/11 means, and working out 8/11 to £10.
Meanwhile let them all stay in the past,8 halfcrowns to the pound!

I don't think they know much about decimal points on the racecourse unbiased. The blind wouldn't see it, and the devious would ignore it.
