Why on earth did they ignore the flag???

The fact that the "yellow flag was raided" gives the stewards no option it has to be voided

why were they being waved around the fences, why not shout stop and wave the flag around ?

yellow flag nearly caused more carnage,yellow flag because 20 yd gap was to small,so they all squeezed through a 15 yd gap on a bend and through the original gap that was deemed to narrow by stewards,

I've always said jockeys are ten-a-penny.

You could train a monkey to do what they do.

Previous void races have seen several yellow flags waved at different points all around the course.

One bloke standing in front of a fence pointing his flag to avoid the fence is appalling incompetence by the racecourse.

Top traners now sending their head lads to the zoo, to swap their stable jockey for a monkey.

flag doesn't mean avoid the fence.  means stop and all of them should know that.

Would it not make more sense if the flag was red?

My point is that flags should have been waved at all points from the back straight to the last fence.

winner won it on merit ,only ones i saw pull up were beat anyway ,had 25 ew on winner on here at 17s ,concentrating on football bets ,wondered why account was less than should be ,marvellous ......i give up .

That's brutal luck. Just thinking imagine if one of those horses who should have been pulled up as per yellow flag fell and got killed at the last.

The winner's connections won't be very happy, the 11yo will get re-handicapped on that run.

What was the official reason for stopping the race?

Without the flag it would have looked like any other race where they avoid an obstacle.

worried about a bunched field getting through gap where  screens were up.ended up going through a smaller gap on a bend and then through the gap they tried to avoid,

mandatory 10 days for ignoring yellow flag could have got more for taking wrong course as well

who decides they might not get through the gap ,the guy with the flag has sole right to decide ??sort it out ,even the commentators had no inkling that it might be voided ,and why should it have been ,farcical ,feel for the connections of the winner aswell ,won it on merit.

Who has decided than an insipid yellow should be the choice of stopping a race?

At the least have the person with two flags waving them across each other.

As it was the race appeared to finish without an issue.

The design of Sandown going to the Pond fence leaves so little option for finishing the race.

This modern decision to stop and void races  more and more leads to only being a matter of time before a prestigious race goes this way.

in fairness i had 6 bets today and the only return i got was the void race !

For all my complaining , I had a bet with 3 big priced runners in 5 races in e/w doubles.

Two winners ,Hogan's Height 28/1 and.......Doing Fine 28/1 .....other 2 runners unplaced treated as void.

took 73 of me for horse winning  how can this be right when weiged in

Just got back from Sandown, thre were people running around rearching for their lost tickets and others trying to find discarded tickets to claim other people's money, a sad end to an otherwise excellent days racing

The middle railway fence to be omitted for this race due to being damaged in the previous race.

An enquiry was held to consider why Neil Mulholland was running CAROLE’S DESTRIER here at Sandown on going described as Soft, Good to Soft in places, having declared the gelding a non-runner at Sandown on 10 November 2019 on ground with the same official description. The trainer stated that the owner wished to run on this occasion as they were running out of opportunities for the gelding.

Hugh Nugent, the rider of HOUBLON DES OBEAUX (FR), had fallen rounding the final bend on the first circuit. After viewing a recording of the incident, it was found that no other horse or rider was involved and the incident was caused by the gelding sustaining an injury.

An enquiry was held to consider the circumstances surrounding the deployment of the yellow ‘stop race’ flag shortly after rounding the final bend on the final circuit. The Clerk of the Course, the Head Groundsman, Jamie Moore, the rider of STEP BACK (IRE), Daryl Jacob, the rider of DRAGON D’ESTRUVAL (FR), Adam Wedge, the rider of SHARP RESPONSE (IRE), Stan Sheppard, the rider of CONINGSBY, Harry Skelton, the rider of GET ON THE YAGER, James Davies, the rider of DARK FLAME (IRE), and Philip Donovan, the rider of DOING FINE (IRE), were interviewed and shown recordings of the incident. Being a 7lb claiming conditional, Donovan was represented in the enquiry by the trainer. they've all seen the flag, that's why they've all gone around the fence
they either didn't know what the yellow flag meant or chose to ignore it
so either way its a ban

they should count themselves lucky to have only got 10 days imo because the jockeys had no idea what was on the other side of the fence, so carrying on past the yellow flag constitutes dangerous riding

The BHA is set to revise the system for announcing void races after a chaotic running of the London National led to confusion in the Sandown betting ring on Saturday.

Punters and bookmakers were forced to wait for the conclusion of a lengthy stewards' inquiry – more than half an hour after the race had finished – for an official announcement that the race had been declared void.

One leading bookmaker described the delay as "ludicrous" and the BHA said it was ready to bring forward the announcement of a voided race before addressing the other elements of the stewards' inquiry.

A BHA spokesman said on Sunday: "An inquiry was immediately announced by the stewards, and then the jockeys involved and the clerk of the course were spoken to before announcing a decision, in line with procedures.

"In future we will take a look at these procedures to separate out the void race part of the inquiry from the other elements in order that we can inform racegoers, broadcasters and the betting public as to the outcome of the race more quickly.”

Officials voided the race due to the veterinary team attending on-track to Houblon Des Obeaux, who suffered a fatal heart attack on the final bend of Sandown's chase course just after the Pond fence.

Seven jockeys were handed ten-day suspensions for continuing to race despite the stop-race yellow flag being waved by the third-last fence. That was the only indication to racegoers that the race had been voided, with commentary of the race continuing as normal.

Under the rules, all bets were voided, with punters entitled to a refund on their stakes provided they still had their betting tickets, but due to the delay many racegoers had already discarded them.

Paddy Power were one of several firms to pay out as a goodwill gesture, and spokesman Paul Binfield said: “We very much believe the stewards’ inquiry should be conducted after they have determined the race is void.

"As soon as that yellow flag is raised it’s a void race and that should be announced straight away. Otherwise there’s a chance we could have paid out and then have to try to claim that money back.

"On this occasion we paid out on the ‘winner’ after the eventual announcement and it cost us six figures on ‘a race’ that would otherwise have been a winning one."

Coral spokesman Dave Stevens said: "While the incident that led to the race being voided was tragic for connections, it seems ludicrous that it took so long to make an announcement.

"A more immediate decision would certainly help avoid the confusion we saw with settlement of bets on course and off, as many punters will discard losing betting slips straight away as a matter of habit.

“Online refunds of losing bets can be made easily enough, but in shops it’s a less simple process. In no way are we disputing the decision to void the race, just the time it took to make it public."

Betfair spokesman Barry Orr added: "From a betting perspective, the quicker confusion and doubt is removed the better it is for punters, and the industry at large.

"It’s a no-brainer that once the decision to void was confirmed, it should be announced immediately. It would fill that vacuum of uncertainty and let everyone move on from the incident."

Sandown 'Hoover' a threat to punters reclaiming slips
Punters hoping to claim money back on discarded betting tickets for Saturday's void race at Sandown will have to hope that the track's 'Hoover' did not clean up their wagers.

Online bettors will have had no worries getting their stakes back but, according to a Tote employee at the track on Saturday, a man nicknamed The Hoover searches for discarded slips hoping they contain unclaimed winnings.

Saturday's London National would have been ideal for The Hoover. As it was the last race, many punters would have left the course immediately after the horses passed the finishing line.

The employee said that despite being fully aware of what he is doing they have no choice but to pay The Hoover.   

On-course Tote punters who discarded their tickets can write to Totepool with details of their bets to request a refund – assuming The Hoover did not find their ticket.

Discarded betting tickets that were placed with on-course bookmakers and were not brought to the attention of the betting ring manager on Saturday will be unable to be reclaimed.

What they should do is to get all of the jockeys who failed to stop riding after the yellow flag was displayed on Saturday. Put them in a classroom with 5yo pupils and ask the question...what must you do if a yellow flag is raised during a race?.

Still no joy from "the traders at Betfair" who didn't realise the race was declared VOID.

still think everyone is missing the point ,tragic though it is ,the screens going round an injured horse does happen sometimes ,but it very rarely means the race being stopped and declared void,a horse fell and was killed at the first fence in the Grand National this year or last ,should they have stopped the race and called it void?The yellow flag should not have been waved in my opinion .

Agree snowy, although it might have helped if the flag man had waved the flag instead of pointing it in the direction of the fence to

be avoided. He could also have been in a much more prominent position. Had he been clearly visible and waving the flag vigorously

exactly roggrain ,he was pointing the flag as if to say ,"go that way " and the commentator said ,"they are being waved round the screens"
and will omit the pond fence.
