Remember there were a few fatalities around that time but the surface was changed to tapeta in 2014. Unfortunately these 2 horses went wrong at virtually the same time but not next to each other, quickly harrowed the part of track where it happened but i don't think i'd be happy to run a horse there at the moment. Also notice nothing in the RP about it, with what has been happening at Santa Anita you'd think someone would have taken notice.

Very sad and will give anti-racing people reason to call for a ban, libdems wanting an independent administrator for racing which would be a nail in the coffin for racing imo.

And that's a polytrack surface! Perhaps the longer an artificial surface has been down, the worse it performs. Wonder if its anything to do with the huge amount of rain thats fallen recently, makes the surfaces ride faster doesn't it, presumably then a harder surface, very worrying imo for the AW flat tracks.

Horse racing got a walk-on part in the Liberal Democrat manifesto, published on Wednesday, in the form of a pledge to “establish an independent regulatory body for horse welfare to prevent the abuse and avoidable deaths of racehorses”. The policy, which was passed at the party’s 2018 conference, “would not help” advance horse welfare in racing, according to the British Horseracing Authority, which currently has responsibility in this area.
A BHA spokesman, responding to the manifesto, said that racing “has a clear track record in delivering improved welfare outcomes for our horses. British racing’s evidence-based approach has already significantly reduced avoidable risk – an approach endorsed by Defra – and we have a clear ambition to reduce this further through our investment in a predictive risk model.”

Even as racing enthusiasts i think we expect horses to get injured over jumps when falling badly, we don't like it but accept it as we know how brittle horses lower legs can be, but in general the softer ground helps a horse when they land badly as they slide as the ground gives way, but we don't really race them on Firm ground now over jumps. Perhaps the AW courses have to take more precautions after a prolonged period of heavy rain and do a lot more deep harrowing for days before a meeting.

Was it just coincidence that it happened in the claimer?
Obviously these are horses connections are prepared to let go, and may be running in such races because they're not the soundest or have had their 'niggles'.

Not sure about that George, one of them was only a 3 yo and had only 4 previous runs, just seemed very odd that they both went wrong virtually at the same time.

Yes, it would seem too much of a coincidence for two horses to go independently wrong at the same time on the same part of the track.
Tamleek was the same age as the winner Scofflaw, yet whereas Scofflaw was having his 50th run, Tamleek was having just his 11th, and his career had included an absence of 606 days which could suggest there had been physical issues with the horse previously.
As for Shattering, nothing obviously untoward, described as 'angular' in the RP comments on his debut, and kept away from good to firm after making his debut on quick ground, but that could simply have been down to the turn in the weather.

Actually, I suppose it could be pointed out that it had taken until September of his 3YO year, to get Shattering to the track, having had a gelding operation in May as a 2YO.
So in the case of both horses, career absences in one form or another, both have ended up in a claimer, so perhaps not the soundest and any inconsistency in the surface, has sadly exposed any weaknesses?
I'm not saying that was the case, just a theory.
In the case of Tamleek, I also note he had broken a blood vessel on his racecourse debut, and then wasn't seen again for 6 months, the first of 4 gaps in his career.

I looked on the BHA site last night to see if there was any comment on what had happened but didn't see anything which I thought was strange. Surely there must have been some enquiry into what happened and if the harrowing did solve the problem then the track was remiss not to do it earlier
The site did show that Butler had had 5 runners on the day and been called in 3 times to explain their running.

Suppose the fact that the rest of the field had just ran over the same spot before them might mean that is the case. George B post an interesting one on the horses concerned as well

Just seen the race for first time. Not seen anything exactly like that for a long time if ever. You would guess there was an issue with the track that troubled horses with established weaknesses. Then again could be a total freak chance that they both went wrong at the same time.
