Did she muck out every morning, clean tack, ride out, hold the horse still whilst the farrier and vet attended him, go back for evening stables, go home dirty and tired and still go back,  day in day out, until the glamour is long gone, and still work on? I'm not saying she didn't do well, but there are hundreds of lads and lasses out there who have far more ability and experience, but won't get a sniff at a winning ride.

Riding a cold-blooded coloured gypsy cob around an enclosed sand school does not make you into a competent rider. Riding a straightforward and kindly gelding up the gallops surrounded by other horses does not make you a works rider. That win today was a PR victory, and maybe British racing needs to portray "inclusivity", but the real workers and risk-takers behind the scenes will rarely be acknowledged.

Just got back from Goodwood. Loads of people backed it because of the publicity. Fair play to them. Whether we like it or not, racing is under pressure as the New Puritanism takes hold. We need all the help we can. If this gets to the front page of national newspapers, especially the Guardian, we should rejoice. A good news story.

I think it highlights how desperate some people are to appear that they are onside with diversity.

It was an amateur race that Racing TV didn't even show live.

What is the significance beyond the headline photos in today's papers? Everyone knows there are a limited number of black jockeys and black racegoers. Is that going to change? I very much doubt it. As long as that is down to personal choice and not barriers should we be that bothered? I don't think so.

The 18-year-old Khadijah Mellah, the first hijabi jockey on a British equestrian racecourse, will take part in the 2019 Magnolia Cup charity Flat racing’s summer highlights, The Guardian reported. It took her two years on a waiting list before she could join Ebony Horse Club but she has long been a regular and it pains her that more people aren’t aware of the opportunity.

“To this day, people are like: ‘You ride in Brixton? Where?’ There’s literally a railway that goes above it, you see the horses from the train. Does no one pay attention?” Mellah said.

Just five months ago, the riding ambitions of the Muslim teenager didn’t extend beyond occasional lessons at the club in London. Yet, she’s currently expected to line up in a challenge event against former jockey and cyclist Victoria Pendleton, Irish model and TV presenter Vogue Williams, Apprentice series nine runner-up Luisa Zissman and others in a cavalry charge at the Sussex racecourse.

Mellah is being trained by Hayley Turner and Oli Bell, the latter executive producer of a documentary film about the challenge she has taken which will also be a significant moment in British racing.

Because the vast maj of non muslims think women who wear a hijab (or similar) are on the extreme end of the religion, this is of course nonsense and in many cases is cultural and nowt to do with religion. I lived next to an Eritrean family in Bristol who 99% on here would call muslim (by their dress) but they were (very) Christian. In all the interviews i have seen she hasn't mentioned Allah or islam once, only when prompted by the (non muslim) interviewer and don't forget that here most women wouldn't go out without head coverings until pretty recently.
