Always surprised Mac never wrote an autobiography. It would bring in a few shekels and remind people he used to be a serious investigative journalist.

That Irish bloke on ITV tries (and fails dismally) to emulate John.

No one has come close to making the Betting Ring so exciting. Lost out to Political Correctness and having to toe the line.

A large & colourful character in every sense. Stephen Nolan interviewed him a few months ago on his late night BB5 radio show and is was obvious McCririck was saying his goodbyes, his mind was still sharp. RIP John McCririck.

In 1978 he was named specialist writer of the year at the British Press Awards, blessed with a portfolio of pieces that included coverage of the Rochester greyhound coup – which would have bagged those behind it £350,000 had bookmakers paid out – and a scandal linked to betting office commentary provider Extel, whose policy to give off times by the minute not the second meant criminals were able to back dogs after races had started if the commentaries were slightly delayed.

One year later McCririck was named campaigning journalist of the year, this time after persistence paid off and he proved the Tote was authorising bets following the off in order to reduce dividends.

"only ever be one Big Mac (thank goodness)"

Got that right.  Nauseating reactionary old scrote,  McCririck begat that oily tick Matt Chapman.  "The face of racing" according to Nick Scholfield on Sky, held back our sport as he was the idiotic reactionary mutton-chopped face of racing.

Rest in Peace John.
An excellent investigative journalist who will be remembered for his exposure of a big Tote scandal.

Sad that someone who had such a comfortable existence should have spent such a long time feeling sorry for himself.

Appeared to live in a bubble.

He may have been a decent journalist but that has really been overshadowed by his over the top performances on Channel 4 and more recently the grotesque Big Brother.

As I have no interest in those so called reality shows his performances in the suchlike was irrelevant to me.

Very sad to hear.
I thought he was a breath of fresh air back in the 80's on Channel 4 racing.
His feedback from the betting ring often pinpointed how the race was likely to go .

Something the tv haven't kept up with for their own reasons because now they should go over to a  live betfair screen with expert analysis.

Like him or not he was great for horse racing over the past 30 years or so. Even people that had little or no interest at all in horses knew his face

What a brilliant man you only have to read what those working closely with him have said today. He was well loved and quite shy and his persona brought racing to people’s attention. The greatest influence in my punting lifetime rip John, thanks for the great times you brought to life for us all there will never be another like you. Another legend leaves our lives.
