The Feature Flat race - run before the WHITBREAD Handicap Chase - on a MIXED (just One-day) SATURDAY card

It usually attracted some potential Top 3-yr-olds

Shergar and Shahrastani to name but two.

Not quite - Brian    ... They won the Classic Trial - on the same card.

I will be charitable, and assume that you were having a little bit of fun.  Happy

Thanks Onlooker but you are too generous. Memory playing up, should have checked.

I liked the mixed card , do we have any in the UK now ?

Mind the Whitbread used to attract quality as well.

Didn't shareef dancer run in the Esher cup 1983 before giving the French and Epsom derby winners Caerleon and Teenoso one helluva beating in the Irish derby? I can't find the result of the sandown race, maybe it was the guardian trial.
Report verbotene liebe • April 26, 2019 6:06 PM BST
Toby Balding's So True beat Shareef that day.

Aquilifer, spot on. My great (and tedious to my friends) question I always pose on this day! Worth noting that Jack Hobbs won the 10f handicap on this card and Taghrooda was entered in the same race but w/d on account of soft ground. There can't be many cards which have 2 handicaps which have produced horses of that calibre
Report aquilifer • April 26, 2019 7:46 PM BST
Well remembered verb/four. Won the Ascot derby inbetween. Ok which future champ won a sandown handicap in may 1987 (pretty sure it was a hcap)

Classic trial sponsored by the guardian when both Shergar and sharastani won

you might be thinking of Mtoto,
he won the Brigadier Gerrard St(1987) Sandown.
Report Fourgoldcups • April 26, 2019 8:12 PM BST
you have me there Aquilifer. Love to know the answer. Lailani won the 12f handicap on Derby Day a few years back and won 3 G1's in it's next 3 races, including the Irish Oaks!! I backed the Sir Mark P plot in the race which came 2nd. Foreign Affairs. Always thought if they had "Justice payouts" in those days I should have got my £ at least :-(
Report aquilifer • April 26, 2019 8:31 PM BST
The answer i was looking for was kribensis. It carried 9-11, apologies if it wasn't a h' cap.

Like it Happy cryptic
Report onlooker • April 26, 2019 8:49 PM BST
aquilifer - You are correct

Kribensis did Win a 3-y-olds Handicap on Tuesday (Evening) May 26th 1987 - carried 9-11 - ran off a Rating of 94.

Went off 7/2 second fav - beat the FAV Rushluann by 2 lengths - It was Kribensis's 4th win on the trot.

Mtoto won the Brigadier Gerard Stakes earlier on the card.
-----------

In a similar vein ...

HALLING - Won 3 Handicaps on the trot as a 3-yr-old before going on to Win 2 Eclipse's at Sandown

^Add - As verbotten liebe posts ...

Toby Balding's So True beat Shareef that day... in the Esher Cup Handicap - when Shareef Dancer was 2nd -
- and future Lincoln Handicap winner Star Of A Gunner finished 4th.

It was Soft/Heavy ground - same as when Star Of A Gunner won the Lincoln.

Onlooker was donnas darling in the race kribensis won that night I know he did race against him.

Blimey - foxy - Your memory amazes me!

Donna's Darling is hardly a name that 'trips off the tongue' ...

Yet - You remembered a 100/1 shot - with Form figures of 000-000 - that ran from 18lbs out of the handicap, and carried 2lbs overweight, to boot - into 6th place- beaten 10 lengths

You must have had 'ten bob' each way on it  Happy

Had a nice touch on the horse February 88 at Kelso Happy
Report foxy • April 26, 2019 9:21 PM BST
Pretty sure the horse came up against surf board at some stage on the flat
Report onlooker • April 26, 2019 9:28 PM BST
I   suppose the next question is ... Who's Donna? .... or do we not ask? Happy

I see she was with George Moore - We had a couple with him around the same time, with Tony Knowles - Cool Shot obviously being the best.

Donna's Darling was bought for 3,300Gns after winning a Huntingdon Seller for Benny Stevens.

Did you have any connection to the new owner P Murphy?
Report onlooker • April 26, 2019 9:30 PM BST
^ * Not Murphy - but P Hughes
Report foxy • April 26, 2019 9:50 PM BST
Yes peter Hughes was the part owner ,George could get one ready back then you will no doubt remember John Burgess was around the yard a lot back then ,just around the time of Aston express and alkepa.

I will tell you about the day I went to Hamilton Park with John Burgess, one day.

He was an Estate Agent and John told me that he owned Warwick Lodge - and George was. presumably, a tenant ... or was it a salaried Trainer ... Think I got both stories. Happy
Report foxy • April 26, 2019 10:50 PM BST
I am sure that will be an interesting story,Hamilton has a part in the Donnas darling story we went to jonjos when he was in Cumbria with a view to putting the horse with him he had got one ready for Haydock the week after Kelso the horse was vicario de bray, after spending the day at the yard he drove me up to Hamilton for a night fixture the horse was sent to Jono but to his credit after about a month he told us the horse would not stand training and advised us to retire the horse, this by the way was after another 5 or 6 runs for George including a win at Sedgefield and a 2 nd to jinxy jack at Carlisle, but burgess was getting on our pip and we wanted away from him.
Report TheAnorak • April 27, 2019 7:44 AM BST
The trainer B Stevens was Barry, not Benny - this is horseracng, not Crossroads. Trained at a small yard not far from Winchester.
