Probably Steve Palmer is working overtime to write the Post's US Masters supplement. The first golf major of the year starts Thursday.
With respect to his cobblers, Steve did say a couple of Postcasts ago that he was scaling back massively because he was giving back last year's winnings too quickly.

he was there last sunday jmdc he tipped kisner at 4's before the semi's and finals of matchplay, although granted, that was his first tipped winner of the year, he has been having a western lately. Will be back for the Masters I would imagine.
If you can go back and read the column from two weeks ago you'll get an idea why he's not appearing.

I disagree Deptford, I think that Palmer`s transparency is interesting and entertaining. Birch is an absolute disgrace however.

He's a great golf analyst, and seem a good bloke, but when all is said and done the Racing Post must surely know they are serializing the diary of someone with a gambling problem, however well his ability as a gambler insulates this.

Just read the column from 2 weeks back, harrowing stuff, clearly gone way out of his comfort zone, and it's seemingly affecting his health judging from the symptoms he said he is suffering from. I'd suggest you'd need a betting bank of at least £50K to be comfortably playing at those sort of stakes, and it would seem he doesn't have that, or at least doesn't have now having endured 3 months of heavy losing.
Throw in he has a young family, perhaps he should be ringing the helpline number at the bottom of the page.

I’ve been wary of his column for a while now, ever since he wrote that, after a day’s poor punting, he took a gold club to his living room wall.
It’s been the tale of a problem gambler for too long. For all his relentless and faintly amusing punning (and the endorsement of that idiot Michael Owen) he is not a suitable advert for a serious racing journal.

Hopefully will tip the Masters winner and be back with a bang. Tipped loads of golf winners last year but started this year poorly, he will pick up again for sure, knows his stuff on the golf and is a very entertaining read on a sunday.
I actually like the bloke and enjoyed his diaries until the RP took the p1ss and priced anyone sane out of the market. (2 cheltenhams ago in my case). Yes, he did sound like a p1ssed up shop punter at times, but I guess some of us have been there. From what I last remember he was pretty sh1t hot on golf, just had a daughter and enjoying life in Weymouth where I visit twice a year. I still wish them well. As for Birchy, gotta be the worst column they ever got ready!

I've just been reading his sign-off column on 24th March, but didn't realise how pertinent it was. I'll try and scan it on to here, but this is the crux of it. He says "My nerves have got too frayed, my brain aches, I get chest pains on Saturday and Sunday nights, and most mornings, and I am permanently stressed and tired. That is what happens when you smash past Sachin Tendulkar's batting average in terms of lost bags for the year. I just can't start hunting down Donald Bradman.
When I watched Paul Merson weeping about a losing streak on the brilliant ITV programme Harry's Heroes: The Full English the other night, I could relate to that suffering much more than most. Harry Redknapp did a voiceover at one stage and said: At the height of Merse's gambling addiction, he lost 20,000 in one weekend."
Is that all? Worryingly, that was my first thought. I have done likewise on a couple of occasions, but the difference between Merse and I is that he was a Premier League footballer earning mega-bucks. I have never had a serious wage, but wager like I am banking the salary of Eden ruddy Hazard.
A small retreat has to happen,then, I'm afraid, comrades, I need some respite from the constant cloud which has been following me. My first-born starts school in September and I feel like I have missed a lot of her growing up because I have spent it all in a bubble of golf distraction. I will still put in the same amount of effort that I always have in identifying potential golf winners for Racing Post Sport, but I will not win as much when we win, and I won't lose as much when we lose.
I am hoping that the expression "You can't keep a good man down!" is accurate. I am hoping that I am a good man. And I am hoping that I can follow in the footsteps of much-loved Magic Man Merson, who bounced back from his latest betting woes by scoring a match-clinching goal for England in Harry's Heroes. Get in there, Merse. Great goal, comrade. Retreat, breathe, recover, live to fight another day.
Steve, I do not label you as a compulsive gambler, nor do I compare you to anyone like Merson. You are too good a judge for that. I know your dear wife is expecting another child shortly, and you must never reduce your support for her, she sounds like a fantastic woman! I, like you, have learnt my lesson backing horses, and you only have to lose a lot to refine your strategy, and make it a winning one. Like you, I could never completely give it up. Sometimes it comes all too easy, at others it is downright horrible. Your strategy of winning a million and finish, is where you have gone wrong. You are making your punting twice as difficult with your ridiculous multiples, and you wouldn't be happy with a million anyway! The worst thing that happened was you becoming Jack The Lad with some sensational selections at the end of last year. Now that you have done it all back, please rethink your strategy. Bet singles only, take a cash out occasionally, like you could have with Woods, if the figures are to your advantage. People don't respect you, reading your articles, because they are only waiting for your downfall. Don't drink alcohol during your golf watching, it only makes you bolder and more reckless. We would love to see you win smaller amounts 52 weeks of the year. With darts, your strategy is again completely wrong, and you can make a nice living punting the shrewd way, not yours I may add, with the World's Greatest Human! Please keep tipping!

we all love the golf and land the odd big priced winner from our stable of golfers,but most of us including palmer cast our net very wide with multiple selections,EW ETC, then maybe a bit of hedging if we have one in the mix,seemingly large pricewinners are quickly eroded
