Just watched the Barney Curley interview and thought it was decent. Say what you like about him as a person but who wouldnt like to be on the right side of the planning and executing of these monster gambles?

Perhaps some of the stories are mythical legend but taking on the bookies and beating them is surely to be applauded, by whatever it takes.

What people don't seem to realise is that Curley isn't taking money from the bookies - they win in the long run. He's taking it from punters who back his horses. It's only after the event that they find out they aren't trying! He is basically a cheat.

Reading between the lines,I think he acknowledged he had not been a very nice person and spared no-one.
It was the sad death of his son that was the defining moment which brought about the sea change in his life.
Sure he was probably a cheat, and many people are guilty of this.
The fruits of his devilment are now being used to the benefit of many in Africa.
So Phil_magroin may be right,but how many other cheats have subsequently become philanthropists.

Fair points RothmanMike, but he wasn't too philanthropic to the ordinary punter...

No diffence in what Curley did to what Sir Mark Prescott does or for that matter what many many trainers do most days of the week.

Nobody's forced to choose and back his horses, in fact anybody who does surely does so in the knowledge that they might be out for a daytrip.
