The Story/Announcement was made this Morning ...

The second day of the Cheltenham Festival is now under threat, with the racecourse predicting Wednesday's racing will hinge on at least one morning inspection.

Eleven years on from the cancellation of the festival's day two programme due to strong winds, the same fate could befall a card that is due to feature the Betway Queen Mother Champion Chase.

Should Wednesday's meeting be abandoned, the afternoon's races will be staged on Saturday.

Clerk of the course Simon Claisse had on Sunday played down the threat caused by Storm Gareth. However, the expectation is now that wind speeds of around 50 miles per hour could place temporary structures in jeopardy.

Should it not be possible to give a green light to racing at the point of the first inspection, Cheltenham has not ruled out the possibility of pushing back the time at which racegoers are allowed to enter the racecourse.

Speaking on the Cheltenham Twitter account on Tuesday, Claisse said: "We wanted to give you an early insight into conditions for tomorrow as the forecast is looking challenging, with strong gusting winds throughout the day.

"We are continually monitoring the situation and will keep racegoers informed as the conditions present themselves."

Report asparagus March 12, 2019 6:53 PM GMT
Obviously would be a terrible idea to move it permanently to a saturday for virtually any proper racing fan.
Report San Quentin March 12, 2019 6:56 PM GMT
Not so sure.Think if planned correct races and policed correctly would be great.
Report asparagus March 12, 2019 7:00 PM GMT
It's already packed to the rafters and sold out so the only thing that changes is the dynamics of the crowd. More stag parties and non racing fans. Whilst you get plenty of drinkers at the Festival the vast majority love their racing. Friday is a much better day for Gold Cup publicity too with nothing else to take on. Saturday has Six nations and football to compete with for headlines and space.
Report One Nation March 12, 2019 7:02 PM GMT
Completely unnecessary. On Friday it gets a sellout crowd of 70k and is the biggest sporting event happening.

Move to a Saturday and you'd get no increase in the crowd and the coverage would be relegated behind the football.

If that's "moving forwards" I'd like to see what moving backwards is.

Take a look at golf shuffled the majors around{graet move btw}Why?
Report lewisham ranger March 12, 2019 7:12 PM GMT
if tomorrow is cancelled they should move it to Thursday, Thursdays card to Friday, and so on.

the final day will be flat as a pancake if gold cup has already been run. will feel weird to do it that way.
Report sewter lives again March 12, 2019 7:13 PM GMT
do you really think they would leave the GC on Friday if the festival was moved to include Saturday?
Report lewisham ranger March 12, 2019 7:15 PM GMT
maybe cancel the rest of Cheltenham to save punters a further bloodbath, assuming there are any banks left.

Report lewisham ranger March 12, 2019 7:22 PM GMT
why wouldn't they have the gold cup on the sat? because of the clash with footy?! they have the derby on a sat. will only be a one-off anyway.

if you read the above I was suggesting that they should do it a different way than moving tomorrow's card to Saturday.

anyway judging by the forecast, as posted by someone else, sat will be just as bad if not worse so probably moot anyway.
Report San Quentin March 12, 2019 7:38 PM GMT
No read your post. You clearly state the GC has already been run before Sat "as it would be flat as a pancake"Currently GC is FRIDAY so your first line suggest Sat.Do the Maths.
Report lewisham ranger March 12, 2019 7:47 PM GMT
I don't see what the issue is here other than you fundamentally lacking I.Q., and wanting to pick a fight to cover that lack of intelligence.

anyone with any brains can clearly see that in my orginal post I was clearly suggesting that the final day, (ie moving the weds to a Saturday) would be flat as a pancake if the gold cup had already been run, on the Friday as it normally is.

I don't know what you are trying to infer, honestly. anyway another goon moves dangerously close to the block list.
Report elise March 12, 2019 7:56 PM GMT
shoving the days along feels better from a racing perspective but i think it might cause a much bigger ticketing and hospitality issue than just switching weds to saturday
Report San Quentin March 12, 2019 8:01 PM GMT

Where does that suggest the GC will have been run on FRiday?

Where cateries have prior obligations at other courses on Saturday
I assume the main bars would still operate
