Just heard this too on Radio 5

2008 was the last time the high speed winds caused the abandonment. Had a bumper race-oacked day on the Thursday.

The Story/Announcement was made this Morning ...

The second day of the Cheltenham Festival is now under threat, with the racecourse predicting Wednesday's racing will hinge on at least one morning inspection.

Eleven years on from the cancellation of the festival's day two programme due to strong winds, the same fate could befall a card that is due to feature the Betway Queen Mother Champion Chase.

Should Wednesday's meeting be abandoned, the afternoon's races will be staged on Saturday.

Clerk of the course Simon Claisse had on Sunday played down the threat caused by Storm Gareth. However, the expectation is now that wind speeds of around 50 miles per hour could place temporary structures in jeopardy.

Should it not be possible to give a green light to racing at the point of the first inspection, Cheltenham has not ruled out the possibility of pushing back the time at which racegoers are allowed to enter the racecourse.

Speaking on the Cheltenham Twitter account on Tuesday, Claisse said: "We wanted to give you an early insight into conditions for tomorrow as the forecast is looking challenging, with strong gusting winds throughout the day.

"We are continually monitoring the situation and will keep racegoers informed as the conditions present themselves."

Dear dear . Might just be why our sport struggles to move forward with prehistoric ways of thinking.

Obviously would be a terrible idea to move it permanently to a saturday for virtually any proper racing fan.

Not so sure.Think if planned correct races and policed correctly would be great.

It's already packed to the rafters and sold out so the only thing that changes is the dynamics of the crowd. More stag parties and non racing fans. Whilst you get plenty of drinkers at the Festival the vast majority love their racing. Friday is a much better day for Gold Cup publicity too with nothing else to take on. Saturday has Six nations and football to compete with for headlines and space.

Completely unnecessary. On Friday it gets a sellout crowd of 70k and is the biggest sporting event happening.

Move to a Saturday and you'd get no increase in the crowd and the coverage would be relegated behind the football.

If that's "moving forwards" I'd like to see what moving backwards is.

why wouldn't they have the gold cup on the sat? because of the clash with footy?! they have the derby on a sat. will only be a one-off anyway.

if you read the above I was suggesting that they should do it a different way than moving tomorrow's card to Saturday.

anyway judging by the forecast, as posted by someone else, sat will be just as bad if not worse so probably moot anyway.

shoving the days along feels better from a racing perspective but i think it might cause a much bigger ticketing and hospitality issue than just switching weds to saturday

Presumably there talking
Hospitality
Where cateries have prior obligations at other courses on Saturday
I assume the main bars would still operate

Tomorrow is Wed hence Fridays card moves to Sat in his/her post.just admitt a mistake .

FFS will you guys just stick to FACTS..........if tomorrow is moved to Saturday......it is within the rules...END OF!!!!  Even the BHA could not sanction juggling the remainder of the meeting to move Friday to accomodate tommorow and move Friday to Saturday.The rules do not allow it..........................be grateful that they are at least thinking of saving tomorrow?

don't no if your suggesting just moving gold cup itself,but its run on different course to wedensday,s card, if they move wed card to sat can they return to wed course after running thurs,fri on different track, logistically etc

they should just abandon the meeting till june when the weathers nicer
