" Elliott ready for ‘business as usual’ in Ireland Gordon Elliott insists it will be “business as usual” – despite being caught up in the outbreak "

The horses from the infected yard had raced earlier in the day at Ayr and Ludlow, potentially exposing other horses across the country and in Ireland to the disease.

Among others, Gordon Elliott was well represented at Ayr at Monday where he saddled a treble.

The BHA said in a statement that the identification of the virus in vaccinated horses presented a “cause for significant concern”.

It added: “The action to cancel racing has been viewed as necessary in order to restrict, as far as possible, the risk of further spread of the disease.

“The BHA has worked quickly to identify which yards could have potentially been exposed today and identify the further actions required.

“The BHA is presently communicating with yards potentially exposed to ensure appropriate quarantine and biosecurity measures are put in place and horse movements restricted to avoid possible further spread of the disease.

“The full extent of potential exposure is unknown and we are working quickly to understand as much as we can to assist our decision-making.”

The action to cancel Thursday’s races was taken with unanimous support of the BHA’s industry veterinary committee and will affect meetings at Huntingdon, Doncaster, Ffos Las and Chelmsford.

Equine influenza is a highly infectious disease of horses, mules and donkeys. Symptoms in non–immune animals include high fever, coughing and nasal discharge.

Just a thought, if this goes on for another fortnight, Ireland a great bet for which country will have the most winners at Chelters, only horses
from Ireland, France and a few outside countries may have runners at the meeting.

I do think that Gordon Elliot's decision this morning to declare 'High Expectations' for the Befair Hurdle at Newbury on Saturday as totally irresponsible considering the current state of affairs. Personally, I have 'low expectations' that Racing will go ahead on Saturday but what made Elliott think that declaring/intending to run the horse was sensible? I'm pretty certain that the Irish Racing Authority will say (if indeed they haven't already), don't enter/declare any horses in GB racing or make any travel plans until further notice. And it's surely up to the BHA to advise Irish trainers not to declare/travel at the moment (entry/dec fees returned etc).

If they're kept in quarantine on their return like the ones that went to Ayr, I don't see why they shouldn't run.

The race is likely to have been the target for some time, is the most valuable handicap hurdle of the season (and not as high class as it used to be as people seem to prefer to wait for Cheltenham). Good race to target imo.
