Good decision, a long rest that's what Samcro needs. Hopefully, he comes back next year, and beat Stradivarius in the Ascot Gold Cup 1st time out before going chasing for more glories...here's hoping!

Bubble well and truly burst. Awfully campaigned to say the least this season..

easy to say now but they got it badly wrong

did they believe the hype themselves

They've had 3 runs this season. Feels to me O'Leary was being stubborn. Could of always changed route throughout the season.

I still think he'll be a top chaser I just think the campaigning of the horse has been questionable..
Report impossible123 December 30, 2018 8:03 PM GMT
The horse's spirit and mojo were broken after being passed and laughed at by Buveir D'Air in the Fighting 5th. And now just gives up whenever a horse passes him.

He needs a gee-gee psychotherapist to realign the loose wires in his head.
Report MJK December 30, 2018 8:07 PM GMT
The horse clearly has a problem. Different distance or chasing wasn't gonna change that.
Report thelatarps December 30, 2018 8:08 PM GMT
its funny.
The only championship race gigginstown have ever won at the festival is the gold cup
the only one mullins has won is the champion hurdle.
I just think the giggy operation is geared toward staying chasers.
I think Elliott has been very lucky getting many of o'learys horses, especially the ones that got transferred from willie m.
Report Afc888 December 30, 2018 8:16 PM GMT
Hmm. I don't really see how you draw that conclusion based on jumping hurdles/running over a distance way on the short side?
Report thelatarps December 30, 2018 8:30 PM GMT
I havent the foggiest idea as to how to train a horse but i would imagine that training a 2m hurdler would involve different sets of skills than a 3m chaser.
I am just wondering if Elliott knows what it takes to win a champ hurdle.
He obviously knows how to win a gold cup.
Maybe if Samcro was with mullins or a henderson they would hve worked out the correct discipline for samcro after chelters last year?

The horse is just not the same horse. If you look at the turn of foot from last year its just not there. Anyone who thinks the horse was just a plodder last season is wrong. But he looks like one now. If he ran over 4f or 3m now he'd still run as though he was slow.
Report punchestown December 30, 2018 9:21 PM GMT
Problem is twofold, horse is just not the same and is amiss somewhere,it's last 4 runs have been over an inadequate trip and ground (with good mentioned in it twice) and it's three runs this year were hard races and were close enough together to have compounded the situation.
Report thelatarps December 31, 2018 4:00 AM GMT
I dunno
Looking at that race the other day I noticed that every time samcro had been held up in his races he usually cantered into the lead up the home straight and won pretty comfortably.
Every time he had led or been ridden right up with the front runners he had found nothing.
Bedrock did him at downroyal and buvuer dair did the same at newcastle.
Even in his bumper days he almost got caught out by one of willies called good thyne tara I think, when making the pace.
I remember dear old hardy eustace regularly getting chinned in small fields in prep races in ireland before hosing up in the champion hurdle.
Hardy was a front runner of course which I dont think works for samcro.
It will be interesting to see what comes out of these medical tests that giggy will be conducting.
Could be there is nothing amiss and all he needs is a strong pace on softish ground at prestbury...
But at this stage, that certainly isnt a puntable option.
It looks like connections are as clueless as to what to do with him as i am..

They're sending him to Craggy Island for some "Chris the sheep" treatment...he'll be back as good as new or even better.

Was always a big strong good looking precocious beast, beat elegant escape as a four year old elegant escape is winning extreme distances it's maybe being caught up by other horses growing into their frame, and is not as quick needs further.

what quick horses (not chasing types or more staying types) has it beat for a turn of foot over 2 miles?
Report stridingedge December 31, 2018 10:26 AM GMT
It may well be it's not quite the same horse out of novice company this season but there's nothing glaring in it's race record to me that shouts CH and I'm very surprised the route it has taken. For me it looks like a horse that just isn't a top class 2 miler but could easily be very decent when less emphasis is on speed over a trip be it hurdles or fences.

Puts Buveur D'Air performance in Fighting Fifth into perspective. Somerville Boy ran like a drain at Cheltenham, Samcro not right, Vision Des Flos not much better. Verdana Blue beats BD without maximum pressure being applied.AIS said he would lay BD all day in CH in March. Me too.

Having seen him win at Leopardstown last season off a slow pace he was very quick from the second last.

I looked at what has happened since out of that race MJK

I think Sharjah would beat those just behind Samcro hollow now just can't have been it's running surely, certainly not on a par with this season.

I'm not sure how good that race is, slow ground and pace btn a couple of chasing types.

just my opinion  along with it's runs at 2m4f and 2m5f. On the whole there is more evidence in my eyes this horse probably isn't a top draw 2 miler. Ground where they have to swim round at cheltenham and plenty struggle could help it but that's no basis to class it a top draw 2 miler at present.
