Not saying that, I'm just summising to how they went about it...sorry, hope you get your money back.

When was the bet placed, you were obviously not on the site for a good while for them to get away with it, these things usually happen overnight I believe, but not in this case by the looks of it.

Thank you for your reply and thank you to the others for the good advice.My husband has just Emailed them again suggesting the suspicious bet element.

I posted a similar thread recently whereby a friend of mine was hacked at ****. The bet was made on a NFL match in the early hours and around £800 was taken. The matter has still not been resolved.

*The bet was on the purple exchange.

Surely they have details of the winner on the dodgy bet, and could block any withdrawal if Betfair were quick off the mark, after all withdrawals take some time to process even if expressed.

rothmanmike, the money on my friends account was withdrawn by Neteller which has a quick turnaround of about 12 hours and purple have no information as to which account it went to.

not too difficult to find the perpetrator.

Sparrow,this was not an overnight job by the look of it and though everyone doesn't check their balance regularly, a cursory check during the day might have shown some abnormality.
I think if your chum had recognised it within 10 hours and alerted the Exchange, they would probably been able to freeze the Withdrawal.
For information only,how long after did your chum discover the problem ?

They'll obviously know the account that placed the bet, therefore they'll know the culprit.

Roida,of course you are correct but getting the funds back may be another issue.
That having been said,the Exchange would be in the best position to rectify the situation and having identified foul play,they should swallow and re-I burse forthwith.

It would probably have been more than 10 hours as he normally uses betfair as a regular trader and only uses Purple for when he fancies the odd bet or two. Crucially I don't think he has the 2 step authentication installed.

So why has Sparrows mates bet still not been sorted, that is totally out of order as they should now all about the villan in his case.
Why the delay in compensating the victim?

I've just spoken to him and they were supposed to get back to him on Tuesday but of course like so many businesses they failed to do so. He has been busy since then and intends to call them again on Monday.

It seems most skulduggery occurs in the early hours, which means they have about 10 hours or so to effect a Withdrawal and scarper with the funds.
I for one, shall religiously check my Balance as early as possible am.
Actually I already do this, but for those who work unsociable hours , this is a problem.

2 step authentication seems to be a must but I reckon someone will soon find a way round that.

hacking a bf account is rare...so how is the password being obtained.

surely will they refund if the winning side side isn't genuine

Do you smell collusion Roida, or maybe one of his pals has got hold of this info.
This has possibly been done before, which could make it difficult for the exchange to resolve.

Why wait to set it up? Surely that's a lot of the problem - I'll get round to it one day. Do it NOW!

His account has been suspended because of this so he cannot set it up yet,I already have.

i'd expect it to be flagged up as transferring funds..odds accepted way out of sync should have sounded the bf alarm.

I'm trying to get my head around what the hackers have done.To access the funds they must have put up a lay of 1.05 on another betfair account which was then matched on the hacked account.So far so good but surely Betfiar must have done due diligence on their account and have details of the person behind it so  should in theory be straight forward to identify the fraudsters.What am i missing ?

Agree posy,should not be difficult imvho.Italy cannot access most of BF but proxy allows anyone access who is interested from anywhere in the world.Even so the proofs required etc should mean an account cannot be accessed for withdrawl for at least a week.And for £700 ish hardly worth the effort is it?

There are plenty of markets where prices are matched way out of line though (sometimes not unobvious markets at off-peak times, was a 1.33 in-running on a horse today way out of the picture for example). Would make it very tough to police as standard.

plenty out of sync using 1 click softwear obv's...but typing manually you want to back a dog f/c at 1.05 hardly a genuine mistake.

I totally agree. My point was more from the other side; that it might be very difficult for Betfair to find the writing coding, etc, to find such anomalies automatically anyway. And that's if they want to do never mind if they can do.

As for a greyhound f/c of 1.05, I thought with the likes of cross-market cross-matching this would be impossible to achieve except on really empty markets (which dogs overnight might well be).

I live in a rural location where there is no mobile reception.Is there any way I could get the 2 step authentication or something similar? TIA.

so anyone could open an online bookies today, take all the deposits then get their mate to hack the accounts, take all the deposits and all they have to do is say did you have 2 step authentication when anyone asks where their money's gone ?

hippolyte, I don't think you have mentioned the time at which the greyhound bet was placed by the hacker. One other poster asked this question earlier in the thread.

If I was attempting to carry this sort of thing out, I wouldn't fancy my chances of success doing it during the day with a length of time from bet placement to the event as this appears to have been done as I'd think it fair to assume that the victim would spot it in enough time. How would they know you wasn't playing at the time?

second again ... No mobile reception here in Somerset either, but with an EE account I get wi-fi calls through the broadband router, and the phone works perfectly normally that way, including the Google Authenticator app you need for 2-step authentication.

Sorry only just looked at the forum again,the answer to the question what time the bet was placed, it was put on at 9.07pm ,next race 9.14pm 4&3,Trap 4 was a 14/1 shot which came last.

Sheffield Greyhounds was the venue.

Just read some other posts on here,yes I am a Female cannot see what difference that makes.

My husband looked at what time the wager was placed that was 9.07 pm,and the odds taken 1.05 on the Forecast market 4x3.But he was so surprised his account had been wiped out he phoned Betfair immediately after he saw this,it was then his account was suspended.So we are only assuming it was the next race could have been a later race at Sheffield.He would not know what sort of markets there are on the Dogs as he never backs on the Dog Racing.Obviously he should have looked what time the Dog race was in question,he did not know at the time there was not a 9.07pm race.He just wanted to contact Betfair immediately.

Wish you all the best, you would think it was a formality to chase up and sort out, but have heard similar stories not ending well.

unfortunately not all frauds like this will be genuine, a few who have done their money will try to get it back.not saying this one isnt genuine but i can understand why the take a bit of time to sort out.

Your husband never backs dogs, yet £750 was placed on a SF at odds of 1.05 on a dog race. To me it is a clear cut inside job or account compromised. Either Betfair has a lot to answer for. Try bombarding Betfair thro' online chat and/or go on Betfair Review Trustpilot website and vent your anger and frustration the matter has yet to be solved.

If the above had happened to one's bank account by a scammer or fraudster using a cloned bank card from a cash point (some distance away), online purchase or cash from abroad one's bank would have compensated one's account within 2 days.

I'm confused now as you would have seen from your account what time the race was, if your husband logged on to see his account unexpectedly empty the very first thing he would have done is check the account statement to see the bets placed.

Also to get that price matched the market would have to be empty, it certainly wouldn't work for a market minutes from the off as it would be stuck behind all other offers.

Also I'm a little curious as to why you are posting rather than your husband, my Mrs. wouldn't have the first clue how to get on here and if she happened to ask me to allow here to post on my behalf I'd probably tell her that I'm feeling bad enough at getting turned over without my Mrs asking the betfair forum for me.

so the onus is on the account holder to bomb proof his or her account and if anything untoward happens this joint just shrug their shoulders, mumble something about not having 2 step authentication and pull the shutters down ....

No it shouldn't be on them, if you go to bed with your front door unlocked and someone robs you, you've still been robbed haven't you and the police still have a responsibility to track the culprits.

I always assume posts of this nature are genuine and as accurate as possible. And assuming it is it is a clear-cut-and-shut case.

Betfair are known for their lackadaisical approach to issue like this one; just get on with it, and keep the account holder posted. Also, allow a communication avenue open eg online chat or email rather than just thro' phone or mobile because of costs; email is best as it leaves a paper trail which can be useful later to both parties concerned.

This issue should not take too long to put right unless there is something untoward with this platform or the individuals (supposedly) guarding our accounts; stories like these appear too regularly and often to instil confidence something I've always have a premonition it could happen to me hence I've never left more than £5 in mine over night just in case - prevention is better than cure is my motto.

Betfair is not a bank, and as such cannot be accorded the same sense of confidence and/or security as a bank; only trust oneself and no one else especially a betting entity or any individual involved with gambling.

Duffy,my husband didnt find out until the next morning just before the first race at Lingfield.It was then he quickly looked at where the money had gone,in hindsight he should have looked more thoroughly into this wager,but he just phoned Betfair straight away and they blocked his account,so he could not look into his account after this.My husband cannot post as his account has been suspended.As for betting on here and elsewhere,I enjoy Horse Racing and Football.We have been to numerous Race Meetings together and both enjoy watching sports on Sky,Football,Golf,Horse Racing are our favourites.Why do you think my husband married me,at least there no moaning when the Sports are on TV.

Impossible123,I agree with you but to withdraw say £750 then the next day put it back in would be a bit laborious,and if you kept doing it the Bank would be on the phone querying the Deposits and withdrawals

second, betfair have a regulatory obligation to detect suspicious transactions and the fact that the man's account wasn't already locked shows that they failed in this regard.

obviously there is merit in the dealer's comment, but it should be impossible to dump cash in such a way in any case.

btw I also take the view that if someone is hacked and their money is lost by a joyrider on normal bets then betfair has no obligation. It is simply the circumstances of this case that make me consider that betfair have an obligation.

Maybe b/f should payout straight away like the goverment did with the Grenfell survivors.

'hippolyte', point accepted. I only bet antepost or the occasional big races on saturdays or meetings. Keep chasing Betfair (everyday); Trustpilot Review website is another good platform for a quick response or update.

'GLASSGOW...', behave. Grenfell was a bit like PPL - a claim is usually honoured especially the small ones as not would be too time consuming, if challenged. Where Grenfell was concerned the council responsible and government would try and avoid any bad publicity at all costs hence little if any due diligence done must be instant, and not thorough given the lack of accurate data of size and identities of occupants in the building.

Should be easy to get a chronology, i.e. what account and what time was the lay bet of 1.05 placed, followed by same for the back side of the bet.   I assume it was that way around to stop someone else laying the bet.   From this they should be able to see who is involved and determine if there have been any other realtionships between the accounts.   Addresses, contacts, names, other matched bets, similar bets placed.   This will take a bit of time but should be part of the investigatory process.

Not sure what the withdrawal limit is before BF need to conduct a KYC on an account.   If they have done one on the withdrawing account, they should be able to track and may have grounds to either proceed with criminal (or civil charges) or just write it off (likely cheaper).

Sorted by Betfair in less than 2 weeks ,so can't really fault them.

When a fraud like this had been perpetrated the entity involved very rarely divulged how it had been carried out for fear of the same offence being repeated with regularity as it would erode the confidence of their clients or users. A classic example was the cloning of credit cards; it took the banks ages to come clean.
