they should have retired him after last time imo but they just will not let go

understandable but sad to see

Such a wonderful horse, lets hope today was his swansong on such a brilliant career and that he enjoys a great retirement.

A terrific horse. Any one of us would have been thrilled to own him. So many terrific wins and gallant defeats.

been a grand servant but sad to see him dog it so furiously on his final outing...some will blame the headgear but they dont call it the rogue's badge for nothing, i guess

They come and they go.

He's only 10 isn't he? I remember when they wouldn't retire a horse until it was 14
Report Dr Crippen December 16, 2018 10:50 AM GMT
That's a good point aitch, and he's only run 40 times.

Wealthy owner I suppose, can afford to treat it as a pet.

Hadn't really been able to do it at the highest grade at 2 miles over hurdles for a long while now but they were a bit slow in either deciding he was a World/Stayers' Hurdle horse or going over fences.

I think I remember him intending to run in a chase but for some reason it never happened (can't recall if the meeting got called off) and then they just decided to stay at or around 2 miles over hurdles anyway. His class would beat others at the shorter distance at a lower level or a poor field at the highest level at the trip but there were too many better hurdlers at 2 miles during his career really.

I don't think it's so much his age that has retired him and more that they don't really have anywhere to go with him now. Aged 10 is late to finally decide that you don't actually have a 2 mile horse and it's late to go chasing too. If he had run well yesterday it might have been a different matter though and they might have let him carry on.

correct, without dropping him in grade, which would be an almighty sad sight
