2 horses robbed in a day can’t be coincidence....seething if you’d backed either.
Report alun2005 October 26, 2018 5:04 PM BST
Can't remember any lead horse doing that previously at Chelters, now TWO today.
Report wondersobright October 26, 2018 5:04 PM BST
should have been sorted after the foxhunters years ago but they'd rather tinker with things that don't need changing

cant be that hard to have a portable rail there surely, racing is so archaic it beggars belief

just a thought but probably the horse doesnt even see a flimsy bit of tape racing @30 mph plus
Report Wazman October 26, 2018 5:08 PM BST
I had no bet in either race and watched both races.  This is not a freak accident - the horses can't see the tapes (esp in the sun) and follow the rails - its a joke really!

Really feel for those connections there -  Do something Cheltenham FFS !
Report pablo-fanque October 26, 2018 5:08 PM BST
they need to remove the rail that is dolled off as it must be attracting the horses eye and thinking that is the line to run to
Report Wazman October 26, 2018 5:09 PM BST
Just think if we have the same thing at the Cheltenham festival!!!
Report wondersobright October 26, 2018 5:10 PM BST
lets hope they don't wait until it happens in the gold cup or the QMCC before its changed
Report bettinghelp October 26, 2018 5:11 PM BST
If they can put up screens in 30 seconds to stop people seeing dead horses, they can put up screens in 30 seconds to stop horses seeing dead ends.
Report by purpose October 26, 2018 5:13 PM BST
The tout selling tickets caused that..
Report CustomCut October 26, 2018 5:14 PM BST
The problem might be the turning rail rather than the lack of a straight rail. Might be able to do without that entirely. Cheltenham is far from the only track where part of the run in is without railing.
Report wondersobright October 26, 2018 5:16 PM BST
I think this sort of thing would happen more without any railing

I can't think of many tracks where the entrance to the back straight is before the run in
Report dustybin October 26, 2018 5:17 PM BST
Cheltenham doing racing akin to a s hitty old backwater
why not put bits of tissue up that might do it.

The funny thing is, there was a bloke in orange holding the ribbon in the first instance, who was swearing blue murder over it - they had dispensed with him by the time of the second.

Report dustybin October 26, 2018 5:27 PM BST
maybe the clark should stand holding that tape if he thinks its enough
Report ged October 26, 2018 5:29 PM BST
I think it's as Custom Cut says. A similar thing happened at Newmarket some years ago in a stayers race on the Rowley mile course when a couple of the runners went to follow the rail that leads off it down the July course a few furlongs after the start - the winner, Tungsten Strike, and, I think, Massife Centrale who was following him. Sept 2004.
Report granitjack October 26, 2018 5:32 PM BST
I was not on Salsify wonder! Cry bad memories for me that race!
Report layemall October 26, 2018 5:35 PM BST
I think Customcut makes a good point about the turning rail. Looks like those two horses just followed it round and disregarded the tape (thats what they do day after day....follow the rail) . The smack/s on their right flank maybe added to the horse making that decision as well.

Watching the replay, the horse starts to prepare to take the bend a couple of strides before the tape. Needs some serious rethink definitely.
Report jimeen October 26, 2018 5:53 PM BST
Jesus Christ , a two year old child can see that there’s a turning rail there , there has to be for the horses to go out into the country . What do you expect there , a set of traffic lights .
Report layemall October 26, 2018 6:08 PM BST
Hey alright...calm down calm down.....the tape is attached to a curved piece of the rails.(can see that in the head on view)......if that part was taken down as they go out on the final circuit.....plus say another 20-30 yards of the other plastic rail round the bend....then attach the tape to a straight piece.......we may not have had the problem.....possibly a better solution than traffic lights methinks!!
Report sageform October 26, 2018 7:17 PM BST
Horses are clearly getting more intelligent as the years past and remember which way they went last time. If the jockey is hitting them on the outside they are clearly thinking, I have to go round again.
Report roggrain October 27, 2018 3:50 PM BST
Today their solution is to have men holding up bits of tape!
Report 1st time poster October 28, 2018 10:57 AM GMT
custom cut and co spot on ,its the turning shape of the rail at that point that's attracting the horse to follow it nothing to do with the tapes, rather worrying that about a dozen ruk pundits, half a dozen itv pundits and the cotc discussing it over 2 days ,couldn't identify this as the problem
Report 1st time poster October 28, 2018 11:00 AM GMT
it isn't just a turning rail ,but the turning rail for a few yards after the straight rail sends them away from the rail before luring them back towards the turn
