I had no bet in either race and watched both races. This is not a freak accident - the horses can't see the tapes (esp in the sun) and follow the rails - its a joke really!

The problem might be the turning rail rather than the lack of a straight rail. Might be able to do without that entirely. Cheltenham is far from the only track where part of the run in is without railing.

I think this sort of thing would happen more without any railing
I can't think of many tracks where the entrance to the back straight is before the run in

The funny thing is, there was a bloke in orange holding the ribbon in the first instance, who was swearing blue murder over it - they had dispensed with him by the time of the second.

I think it's as Custom Cut says. A similar thing happened at Newmarket some years ago in a stayers race on the Rowley mile course when a couple of the runners went to follow the rail that leads off it down the July course a few furlongs after the start - the winner, Tungsten Strike, and, I think, Massife Centrale who was following him. Sept 2004.

I think Customcut makes a good point about the turning rail. Looks like those two horses just followed it round and disregarded the tape (thats what they do day after day....follow the rail) . The smack/s on their right flank maybe added to the horse making that decision as well.

Jesus Christ , a two year old child can see that there’s a turning rail there , there has to be for the horses to go out into the country . What do you expect there , a set of traffic lights .

Hey alright...calm down calm down.....the tape is attached to a curved piece of the rails.(can see that in the head on view)......if that part was taken down as they go out on the final circuit.....plus say another 20-30 yards of the other plastic rail round the bend....then attach the tape to a straight piece.......we may not have had the problem.....possibly a better solution than traffic lights methinks!!

Horses are clearly getting more intelligent as the years past and remember which way they went last time. If the jockey is hitting them on the outside they are clearly thinking, I have to go round again.

custom cut and co spot on ,its the turning shape of the rail at that point that's attracting the horse to follow it nothing to do with the tapes, rather worrying that about a dozen ruk pundits, half a dozen itv pundits and the cotc discussing it over 2 days ,couldn't identify this as the problem

it isn't just a turning rail ,but the turning rail for a few yards after the straight rail sends them away from the rail before luring them back towards the turn
