Every time I use it lately I get a box saying chrome needs closing, even though I close everything before cleaning. I then let it close chrome as requested, but when I do go back onto chrome I get a message saying chrome didn't close properly and invites me to restore previous tabs. If these tabs are still available after cleaning, has the cleaning actually worked? tia.
They're always trying to keep stuff "running in the background" as well. Settings > advanced (under system) "Continue running background apps when Google Chrome is closed"
Disable that bastard if it's enabled.

From an industry expert I've been told it is intrusive and comes with baggage, and unnecessary similarly avast if only a pc as defender and/or spybot are adequate; just clear cache and scan regularly.

CCleaner is NOT a Malware/Spyware/Tracking Cookies piece of Software.
It is merely a vehicle for Clearing Cookies and Cache, and other items/files on ALL your different BROWSERS in one go - Taking less than a minute - as opposed to the 20 minute sweep of such as Malwarebytes.
There is a FREE version of CCleaner - and that is all that you need.
The Paid-for version does have a background 'protection' feature - but, as impossible posts such paid-for 'protection' is fairly unnecessary ... provided that you are not visiting dodgy sites and have Microsoft Essentials(Windows7)/Windows Defender(Windows8 onwards) installed on your PC - which most people will have.
Having ANOTHER 'Protection' Service running at the SAME time will only SLOW Down your computer - same as having 2 Firewalls running simultaneously, which will eventually grind your computer to a halt, and is definitely NOT recommended.
