Hi - I want to use a system that only bets on horse races of certain classes. I can't seem to find a way to detect the class of the race through Betfair site data or API. Does anyone know how to do this? If not, does Betfair have any kind of surrogate indicator that would allow me to guess the class of the race?
Yes - Betfair is just a Betting FACILITY - NOT a Horse Racing information site - whatever they may try to intimate.
As stewarts says, you will need to refer to a more relevant source/site for such information - which is usually contained in the race Title - as in ...
The above advice is given - assuming that you are not 'fishing' - which you may, though, well be - as If you are going to bet on horses by merely relying on the sparse information on Betfair - Then you are 'dead in the water' before you even place a bet.
If you, equally, do not know where/how to source, and process, such BASIC information - you will MORE THAN likely equally also be 'dead in the water'.
No offence meant - Just a friendly, and necessary, reality check... unless you really ARE 'fishing' - as you appear to be aware of, "Class," Bands - yet do not know where/how to find them... an odd equation.

I know that they have altered the qualification rules for this yea, and onwards -
Minimum of two runs in the current season - over at least 1m4f ... -------------
The historic prize, run as the £500,000 Dubai Cesarewitch, has had a revamp which has not only resulted in a prize-money boost but conditions changes designed to support the staying programme.
As well as introducing a ratings cap of 110, all runners must have run at least twice on the Flat since April in a race at 1m4f or further.
Withhold, who won the Northumberland Plate in June, has run only once this year, and under current rules would have been ineligible for last year's race, in which he landed a famous gamble.
He was not the only non-qualifier for the handicap as the new conditions claimed eight other victims including two horses trained by Aidan O'Brien and one by Willie Mullins.
The 107-rated Withhold would have been one of the joint top weights if eligible for the October 13 handicap.
