Shouty Man, Mark Johnson? He can be incredibly annoying but i'll say one thing in his favour he is very enthusiastic about the game.

i give him bonus points today for telling us about colour changes "if you are playing in-running"

Johnson one of the better ones for me. A bit of competition but Cattermole the worst, don't know how he gets some of these top gigs.
|
|
By:
Johnson and Cattermole both poor. I wonder if Johnson, seeing as he didn't commentate on the Leger this year, will continue mention them going past the Leger start in every single jumps race at the track. That's always a pain.

is johnson the guy that called L.A Goes to Vegas? if so he is the worst. wac

Called Samlesbury SAM-LES-BURY in the first today. BAe place near Preston is pronounced SARMS-BURY.
|
|
By:
it isn't so much the actual call, he just seems so incredibly up himself

are you Alex Embiricos?

The one I detest is Ian Bartlett can't stand his ferkin voice. Most of the others are decent. Remember when my kids were younger and I had channel 4 racing on they used to say MR LIPS on dad. They meant Derek Thompson lmao he looks like a sink plunger.

By:
I watch replays with no sound mainly. When it is on I only recognise thommo's voice but there are others who make you want to switch it off asap.
|
|
By:
His pronunciation of "Elegiac" leaves a bit to be desired

Gareth er Topham.. And there off and er racing!

someone had the bright idea of giving john hunt the silver cam, besides sounding as though he was bollock deep into little joe,he just mentioned a dozen names entering the last furlong and hoped he was on the right one when the music stopped

Delta you've got me there.
re Bartlett, i know his voice annoys so many, but i like his calls. i think he's good and not overly egotistical. mark johnston's calls so often seem to have the subtext, me, myself and I. i know Catts is not as good a caller as the others but he's just the best bloke you could ever meet and is a vgd TV host or compere richard hoiles very good caller, knows his onions and another decent bloke simon holt vgd caller there seem other good callers around, too, but i know the voices rather than the names. can't stand derek thomson's smacking of his lips, it's disgusting!! |
|
By:
really enjoy when simon holt doing the local brighton tracks
|
|

Big up happy valley you have some good calls there and Bartlett is annoying lol. Old Thomson always seems to be drawing breath when he commentates lol but he did have a bad illness a while back. I like Malcolm Tomlinson but most of the guys are pretty good. What forks me off is when you back an odds on and the commentator seems to get hard on over the fact it's struggling. It almost seems as though they've laid it to 10k lol

"Horse A takes the lead, B in second, C in third, D in fourth, E is in fifth, f in sixth, G in seventh, H in eighth, I is in ninth, J in tenth" - and repeat......
Commentating for punters whose video is on the blink? Johnston is not quite as annoying as Thompson, but that's not saying much. |

By:
Bartlett, a fooking useless clown

The problem for us old timers is that having been captivated by the sound of Po'S in his prime, nothing can ever live up to that. We didn't know at the time that it would never be better. Easy to forget that even he declined in the later years. To be fair, as irritating as some of the voices are the accuracy really isn't bad at all. However, sometimes I think I'm watching a different race to Ian Barlett. I don't get the Cattermole critics, his voice has a pleasing cadence to my ears.

By:
Nice one steer forth can't stand Bartlett sounds like a ferkin teacher giving a physics lesson lol. Cats ok and pos was a legend.

In a parallel universe - what gets me is women commentating on football. Female vocal chords are not suitable for high decibel excitable throaty roars as when a goal is threatened or is scored. They sound like fishwives in an echo chanber. Excruciating to listen to -but of course PC dictates they must be given so many gigs.
Hope they are kept well away from the racetracks' commentary boxes. |

Peter O’Sullevan was great until he retired at least 10 years too late. YouTube is littered with an embarrassment of errors from him post the mid eighties.
|
|
By:
My least favs are the lip-smacking Thompson, and the out-of-breat at the end of every race Mark Slater.
Both spoil my enjoyment, so resort to mute is the only option. |
|
By:
Bartlett ends up sounding like a Dalek at the end of races, he also fooked up the call in Sean The Stars Arc, called it Sea the Star sar as it went past the post, he re did the call subsequently.

Saxon Farm, so agree re PoS
|
|
By:
and I remember Saxon Farm well - I think! Stan mellor? and mark perrett? Triumph Hurdle?

By:
just checked, it was 1983. I was in my prime!! Shiny Copper, Mrs Nadine Smith, Broadsword, Starfen. Love it. Going to treat myself to a packet of spangles.
|
|
By:
and just because Barlett has a posh voice doesn't mean he's a bad caller or even a bad person, though I do grasp how posh voices often denote a class enemy!!!
|
|
By:
Mute button is barely off for any of them for me. Don't need some idiot screaming at me while I'm trying to actually watch the race.
