30 years since he won the Swinton hurdle, remember it as if it were yesterday. I had Jehovas witness people at the door and i was letting them get on with it etc, looking at my watch thinking got to get to the bookies for the Swinton hurdle in which i really fancied Past Glories of Elseys, had real good placed form in top hurdle races and had won the Welsh hurdle from Floyd, but was about 16/1. Remember listening to them and asking where did they stand on betting/gambling! Of course they said it was a sin and not allowed etc, so i said OK i'm not joining got to get to the bookies for a bet, bye! Stable i had a few shares in horses had Cashew King running who had previously won the County hurdle at Cheltenham, backed both and did the R/F, 1st and 2nd 16/1 and 20/1, never been so happy to not be religious!

My thoughts too foxy,he was a York solicitor and a regular on the northern circuit and of course his son tried training for a while.
Think he always had a couple of horses in training with Elsey, remember a stayer called Cold Storage which I think was half decent, may have run in the Leger? Nice story Stewart,Brian Mcmahon one of my fav trainers. |

I remember cashew king winning the county hurdle in those days it was the last race of the meeting (still should be)I hadn’t come close to backing a winner in the previous 17 races cashew king helped ease the pain.

Cold Storage was 3rd in the 1968 Leger to surprise, surprise Ribero...! Her grand-daughter was Hetherton's 1983 Yorkshire Cup winner Line Slinger

Thanks cork langer,my dad must have taken me to remember,he was a big Elsey fan as was his father before him, remember them backing Double Cream to win the Lincoln.
He was also a massive Piggott fan and when Peleid won the Leger he got the jackpot up that day as I think Piggott rode every other winner,it was about 2.5k. |
|

Remember Elsey/Hetherton having a winner at Stockton/Teeside , think it was National day 1981--Little Wild Duck- just got betting shop , cost me a nice few quid. Think it bred a decent sort in Widgeon, don't know if it was Elsey or Hetherton who had a penchant for naming their horses after wildfowl. Used to know Shaun Salmon who rode quite a few winners for Elsey ,always thought he was a decent jock.

Remember Salmon, could do a lightish weight.

just looking back at the 1990 champion hurdle i noticed the sp of kribensis was 95/40 i thought it was a modern thing all these stupid prices.
turf trivia without looking on the internet in the 1990 champion hurdle there were 3 other champion hurdlers 1 champion chaser 1 stayers hurdle winner 1 supreme novice winner anyone name them ? |

Morning foxy,i remember the previous year better when he was fav and Beech Road won,was working for LRS.
Presumably Beech Road was back the next year?I'd hazard a guess at See you then and do remember stayers hurdler Nomadic way? |
|
By:
3 out of 3 so far ribero beech road of course in his champion hurdle season took a bad fall at cheltenham in a novice chase at the new year fixture,so they decided to return to hurdles ,he won the national spirit at fontwell and was returned 50/1 when winning the champion hurdle even more remarkable he was around 10/1 when winning two weeks later at aintree.

By:
sorry good morning ribero

By:
I was at that new year fixture foxy with LRS,it was 2 days in those days,re the novice chase wasn't it won by Waterloo boy, either a 2 or 3 horse race?
|
|
By:
it was indeed waterloo boy cant remember how many runners but it was a very small field,in those days it was a 2 day meeting i know in 1999 they raced on new years eve everyone got a glass of champagne ,dont know when it went 1 day.
|
|
By:
Remember both days being very quiet.
|
|
By:
something else i noticed was the weakness of the irish team in that seasons champion hurdle just 2 runners 10th elementary 22/1 and 14th redundant pal 33/1 ,this season they will have the likes of melon, samcro ,possibly laurina how things have changed.
|

back then ribero that was something i would not have noticed.

Beech Road's subsequent two defeats in the National Spirit Hurdle were more memorable for me than his victories. In 1990 Richard Guest somehow got the horse beaten at 4/9 when it found nothing on the run-in, and Guy Harwood's Vagador (whom it had beaten by 20 lengths the previous year) edged it out in a photo.
The following year was the best though. I was living in Brighton at the time, and on the way to Fontwell stopped off in the Coral's at the foot of St James Street. Peter Hedger's Al Asoof was 25/1. I had £90 tax-paid at the price without any problems, then took the train to Barnham and watched Mark Richards sweep past Guest on the run-in to land the race at an SP of 15/2. Imagine that nowadays. Two pounds at 24.0 on here, followed by a score at 14/1 in Coral's (if you're lucky) and the rest at SP. By the way, the 95/40 SP about Kribensis was down to John Stubbs returning the SPs that day. It was apparently a solid 9/4 in most of the ring, but 5/2 was being laid on the off in places, so Stubbs insisted that the difference be split. |

Got to go now but will always remember that particular 2 day meeting for despite it being quiet LRS did about 10k on a race.
He was obviously a strong bookmaker but essentially a trader,he used to get the prices from the guy from the west country who i'm sure screaming will have known called Roy and he also had us write the names of the trainer under the horses name, for when a small trainer-infrequent trainer of winners had a gamble he would invariably stand them for plenty usually stating "when they have a winner I can afford to lose" Anyhow this particular day he was taking buttons then suddenly a few faces started backing this horse from about 12s into about 8s and he was happy to take the brunt of it,it even went back a bit before the off but he refused to back it back as to say he didn't rate the trainer was an understatement. The horse was Domarc trained by a certain T Kersey and ridden by his daughter! will never forget it. |
