A punter has netted the biggest payout in Scottish betting history.

The small stakes gambler, from Leith in Edinburgh, invested only £5.35 on a series of accumulators but scooped a mighty £682,282.14 after the windfall on Sunday..

Time Stands Still 8/1
Havana Grey 15/8
Syndicate 11/1
Altra Vita 9/4
Homing Star 10/1
Barbill 6/1
My Boy Sepoy 5/2
Ascot Day 14/1

70x5p 4fold = 10, 719
28x5p 6fold = 174, 670
8x5p 7fold = 292, 922
1x5p 8fold = 203, 969

Bookies William Hill believe it is the biggest accumulator bet ever landed in Scotland and the third biggest permed accumulator in UK history, pipped only by two punters who mopped up with jockey Frankie Dettori’s Magnificent Seven winners 22 years ago.

William Hill spokesman Rupert Adams said: “It’s a bet that defies the odds beyond just about anything we’ve ever seen. Laugh

“We believe it is the biggest accumulator payout in Scotland despite the fact it consists of a series of bets costing just 5p.

“The final leg of the bet was critical, as it completed an eight-fold accumulator and added more than £200,000 to the winning pot. It also meant a lot of the other permutations were big winners too.” Laugh

Adams added: “We think a number of records have been beaten. It is certainly our biggest ever winner on the horses in Scotland.

“Also the £0.05 eightfold bet, which won £203,969.39, is the highest return for that stake in our 80-plus years’ history.” Laugh

He added: “It is all the more remarkable this bet came in on his birthday – it was definitely his lucky day.” LaughLaughLaugh

The winning punter, who is believed to be in his 50s, requested that his identity is kept secret but told bookies he will be sharing the massive prize with his family. Laugh

The punter is understood to bet two or three times a week, selecting horses because he likes their names or the jockeys riding them. Laugh

He is understood to have watched the crucial last leg in a betting shop, where 14-1 outsider Ascot Day ran out a comfortable winner. Laugh

my uncles won quite a bit when they did a 5p win lucky 15 patent, they often used to do well, I used to do it occasionally, can't see anywhere online to do it now though (as patents)

it's 9 horses, so I might have got the number wrong, might be a lucky 21? it's been about 25 years since I did one
