Would have won for sure

Roche knows he's there and he's whipped his horse to close the gap off. He should be disqualified for dangerous riding imo, end of.
Report TheFear • September 19, 2018 6:07 PM BST
wasnt enough of a gap really imo

Badly hampered?

Barged Tosen Ciara out of the way before going for a non existent gap between the front two. It should be disqualified more than the front two be in trouble.

Looked a smart animal to recover from the first incident and concur would have won.
Report workrider • September 19, 2018 8:56 PM BST
I was there today and thought he should have won easily given a clear run. Roche had his whip in the wrong hand for starters , there was plenty of room for the horse to go through before the incident, Lyons came out a little as well and that was the difference between Roche been fired out...I had no bet on the race...

george im embarrassed by your comment.

The point is this, once Roche knows there is a horse on his inner and between the two horses, he should be taking steps to ensure he keeps his mount straight, not to whip his horse to the point that his mount edges left and closes the gap, thus forcing DM's mount out of the gap, which results in him nearly clipping heels and going down. There should never be a win at any costs mentality among jockeys.

Luckily, McDonagh and his mount escaped unscathed.

At Kempton several months ago, there was an incident where a jockey and his mount were forced out of a gap, as that happened, the horse clipped heels and the jockey was catapulted into the ground with tragic consequences.

Incidents like the one tonight should be jumped on from a great height by stewards.

'that his mount edges left'

you said it,that does not constitute 'dangerous riding.
Report andyl • September 19, 2018 10:36 PM BST
53.1 A Rider is guilty of dangerous riding if he causes serious interference by
53.1.1 purposely interfering with another horse or Rider, or
53.1.2 riding in a way that is far below that of a competent and careful Rider and where it would be obvious to such a competent and careful Rider that riding in that way was likely to endanger the safety of a horse or Rider.

We'll have to agree to differ. My 22.03 post is my final post on it.

totally clueless.

so,your saying if a jockey gives a horse a crack and it edges left, that can be deemed dangerous riding.

Report GEORGE.B • September 19, 2018 11:54 PM BST
Grow up.

If a jockey's well aware that his actions are blocking another horse's path, then yes, imo I would deem that dangerous. A horse and jockey nearly ended up on the floor, if you think that's funny then keep laughing.

There has been two really bad instances of dangerous riding in Ireland this week , one in Listowel and last night's episode. The Stewards need to take these happening seriously before they escalate and a bad injury or even worse happens...

"Barged Tosen Ciara out of the way"? have a look at the head on. Tosen Ciara hung left into Egrecio.
I wouldnt go as far and say it was a non existent gap either. it was tight but winner hung left and runner up came off the rail which closed any gap that was there.

My eyesight is not as good as it used to be but i thought Leigh had his whip in his left hand before swapping because his mount was thinking coming up the straight and only after giving him a couple of cracks he hung left.

I honestly dont think anyone did anything wrong (on purpose anyway) just an unfortunate series of events on 2yo horses

Report workrider • September 20, 2018 10:20 AM BST
Imo Roche knew the other horse was there and should have taken measures to avoid contact, instead he changed whip hands and came right across the Weld horse, I'm sure Dermot will be having a word this morning...
Report le stelle di mare • September 20, 2018 10:28 AM BST
he probably should have changed whip hands again alright but still dont think it was as bad as people reckon. admittedly it could have been but luckily it wasnt
Report stu • September 20, 2018 10:46 AM BST
Your never going to try to let another horse through a small gap (if you're trying to win of course), why would you when you're in front.
Report stu • September 20, 2018 10:52 AM BST
Though if anything look to me like the one on the rail came off it and blocked it more than the other.
Report the dealer • September 20, 2018 11:25 AM BST
it was an incident that could have been worse but could never have it as dangerous riding. it seems to me that he is being criticised for pulling his whip through, imo you are making a huge assumption that the horse would go left because of it. horse hang into the whip, the hang away from the whip and they run straight for the whip. i cant see anyway he would have known the horse would go left. it surely cant be expected for a jockey not to use his whip in this circumstance on the chance the horse would hang away from it? if he hadnt used it who is to say the horse still wouldnt have gone left? if he hadnt used it he would have been accused of not trying. its an unfortunate incident for numerous reasons looked worse than it was but no way dangerous imho
Report GEORGE.B • September 20, 2018 11:54 AM BST
It seems to me some people are saying jockeys should be free to use their whips freely and if their mounts hang into the path of another horse as a consequence, or contribute to another horse being squeezed out of a gap, then it's just one of them things.
Thanks for telling us that there should be no onus on jockeys to keep their mounts straight when using their whips.

I wonder how 'dangerous' McDonagh thought it was when he saw his life flash in front of him?

Racing rules are jockeys are free to whip their mounts into the path of another horse?
Report andyl • September 20, 2018 12:52 PM BST
most dont deviate when whipped..
Report the dealer • September 20, 2018 2:06 PM BST
George im not saying that no onus is on jockeys to keep their mounts straight, when using the whip and im only talking about this race. in my opinion he had every right to use his whip in that hand as he had no way of knowing his horse would go left and therefore it was not dangerous riding. if his horse had kept straight like most do nothing would have been said. he didnt continue to whip the horse when it started to drift and in my opinion he did nothing wrong. with regards Mcdonagh and what he thought,i would guess that nearly every jockey at some point in there career would have saw their life flash before them, wether it be riding work, schooling or riding in a race.
Report stu • September 20, 2018 2:28 PM BST
He went for a very small gap when behind the other two, that explains a fair bit.
Report workrider • September 21, 2018 3:12 AM BST
The gap was nearly TWO horses wide when he tried first....
