I love York racecourse |

Not sure about best day (depends in which context) but Frankel winning the Queen Anne at RA must be up there for several reasons.
Detroit winning the Arc (my first visit) was also good. Moorstyle won the Abbaye and i backed them both. Apologies for after timing, but it's common on here ![]() Ghost, A wonderful sprint filly, won at York as a 2 year old, but finished 2nd to Sharpo a year later in the William Hill sprint championship (now the Nunthorpe). |

Thats the one.

marwell won the king stand stakes when it was run on the friday of royal ascot amazingly back then the friday was only half full many considered the royal meeting was over after ladies day,she also won the 1981 prix de labbye the day gold river won the arc ,ridden by walter swinburn who should have been riding shergar in the arc that day but the horse was withdrawn earlier in the week.the july cup she won was probably the strongest july cup ever she beat champions like moorstlye and sharpo at newmarket.as a 2yo she won the molcombe at goodwood ridden by lester piggott, who also rode her in the chevely park, marwell ran in the 1,000 won by fairy footsteps she came 4th as the trip was to far,her only disapointing run was in the haydock park sprint then the vernons where she finished 2nd behind runnet.still to this day i think she is the best sprinter i have seen.

cheltenham gold cup day 1999, £10 see more business 16/1,castle mane £40 9/2,£60 space trucker 9/2,£80 stormyfairweather 12/1,£100 sir talbot 9/1,slept well that night,i had told everyone that katarino was the bet of the meeting in the triumph and didnt back it because of the fast going and also anzum would be a good e/w bet in the stayer if the going was soft and they won at 9/4 and 40/1.the other would be when istabraq pulled up in front of the stands in his bid for his fourth champion hurdle, the reception he got even though people had probally lost a lot of money on him will never be forgotton by me

Foxy,
I can't remember the 2 year old race, but you're correct it wasn't the Lowther. I just looked at Wikipedia to check, but they state Prince Of Wales Stakes .... not sure that's correct as that's run at Ascot and not for 2 year olds or a sprint. Of course we're going back in time and race titles change of course. One of the gurus, GED, Blackbarn et all will help us out. |

Timely thread ,as my choice is the 1985 St Leger(only one I have attended)
Backed 5 winners and was stood very close to the finish line to see Oh So Sharp , Sir Henry and the Kentucky Kid win the fillies triple crown. I have two drawings I bought there on display in the hall ,featuring Ardross and the Dickinson Famous Five. |

you mentioned frankel earlier andrew he off course won on this day in 2010 at doncaster can anyone remember which horse was withdrawn at the start ?
and whilst we are on the subject of frankel my best ever day racing was frankels last i really believe anybody there that day would struggle to mention any other winners that day. |

Marwell did win a race called the Prince of Wales's Stakes at York as a 2-y-old in 1980 - it's the 5F race now known as the Roses Stakes. She'd been rerouted from the Lowther to the St Hugh's Stakes at Newbury run on the same day, but that was abandoned (waterlogged), so she ran at York instead.
She was sent off at 4/9, won easily from Welshwyn, with the subsequent Middle Park winner Mattaboy four lengths back in third. Her time was faster than that of Sharpo in winning the Nunthorpe on the same day. Welshwyn also finished second to Marwell in the Flying Childers and the Cheveley Park. Info all from Racehorses of 1980 - my memeory isn't that good! |

Best day at the races - Warwick, June 6th, 1981. First time I saw my colours carried to victory, by a 4-y-old stayer called Rising Fast, trained by David Elsworth, ridden by the late Richard Fox. He won by six lengths. I collected on a bet of £1000/60 and went home carrying the trophy, a bronze racehorse sculpted by John Skeaping, which was mine to keep until the next running of the race. Nothing will ever beat that first win as an owner.

Early eighties at Ayr. The hunters was the 3rd ot 4th race on the card. They went 10/11 your pick. I looked at this beast in the paddock and although no great judge paddock wise this beast was rippling with muscles and looked extremely fit.
My previous bets were all losers so I stuck my tank on this beast.....Earls Brig. Won by 20L IIRC and could have went another circuit easily. I obviously didn't know at the time but it went on to finish 3rd in the Gold Cup a few years later. In hindsight it should have been a 1/10 shot that day. I think it was 81 or 82. I then backed the last winner at 5/4 without the odds on FAV. It won easily at 9/2. My mentor at the time was a local bookie and asked why I didn't have a smaller amount on at the 9/2. I should have but at least it taught me another lesson. |

On a money front went to Newmarket one day, mad sprint race first race had £2 e w on one on the tote called hay green i believe, paid well over 200 in the win over 70 in the place and i got the placepot up that day as well.
But for me when i go racing its all about the horses nice to land a few bets of cause. But the july course in the summer . . .Is there a better place on earth ![]() |

Foxy, There were 2 NR's, i remember Farhh, who he beat in subsequent races. The connections obviously heard the vibes from Warren Place and thought it better to withdraw ![]() I can't remember the other NR, but i don't think it was of any consequence. |

I could name one because i backed it in the race before, but i know what you mean foxy. My saddest day in racing, watching 2 greats knowing i would never see them again. I loved them both and i use those words in context of the sport. |

Anorak Richard Fox rode for me a few times.

By:
TheAnorak,
Thanks for your 10.42 post, Prince of Wales stakes just didn't ring right when i looked at Wikipedia, for the obvious reason. Likewise my memory fades when i think of the 80's (or yesterday) although i new she had won a a 2 year old at York. A great filly. Handtorofe, With respect to your 14.10 post it must have been an incredible (and emotional) feeling. |

The other horse that was a
NR in the Doncaster race, alongside Farhh, was the Paul Cole trained Colorado Gold. |

Any time you have a winner is a huge buzz but equally you can have a lot of low or sad moments where horses are concerned Andrew
|
|
By:
Sharapour,
Thanks, although the name doesn't jump off the page at me. Handtorofe, I don't doubt that even though i've never been fortunate t own a racehorse. I did have a few Greyhounds at Reading and Slough back in time and when Claremont Point won a mickey mouse graded race at the latter track for the first time, i thought i had the Derby winner. |

I used to go Reading and Slough loved a night at the dogs did you go flapping at Aldershot Andrew

In the 80s i worked for a irish fella who had horses with Weld , anyway Weld had told him to come to phoenix park this day{SATURDAY)y we flew over from Glasgow in the morning and were picked up by a limo and driven to the racecourse , my boss asked to to down to the foyer of the course where i was to meet Dk who already had a newspaper marked up for me , he went through race by race saying things like NAP, WILL WIN , GREAT CHANCE and such like. He had 5 out of 6 winners that day all decent prices as well my boss was reputed to win close to a million that day(was a huge punter) i came home with a wedge that resembled a pan loaf. If only it was always that easy.

I used to go Reading and Slough loved a night at the dogs did you go flapping at Aldershot Andrew Never there, but i had a friend who had dogs with Wally Ginzel at Wembley. He' borrowed' one of them, a half decent open race stayer (and not for the first time). 4 of us went up to Hinkley, it was backed down to odds on .................. and got beat into 2nd !(although he didn't get a decent run). |
