if you said to him rab some people will have backed that hoping for a bit of a price against the fav. Any chance of trying? He'd think you were speaking a foreign language.

not saying he done anything wrong was never going to beat the fav unless the fav fell over he even put it in behind horses just to make sure the 2nd a sure winner

Rab done nothing wrong, was never going as well as the winner, would have never beaten the winner, no point knocking spots off the second to finish a 2L second, when you can given it a kind introduction and achieve the same placing.

Yep. I agree it was never going to beat the fave but he wouldn't have tried to even if it could have.

Connections pay his wages, punters seem to forget that !

As a jockey you ride to orders of owners and trainers, without them you don't have rides.

Also before you say there wouldn't be racing without punters, if that's your view take it up with those who give the orders, not those who are paid to carry them out.

jockeys riding for their own stable a lot worse than freelancers. If youre connections with a non stable jock you cant be sure the fkr will do what you want!

So if you ride to orders I assume that can mean to purposely not win?

@MJK

I've seen some trainers tell riders to do all sorts of stuff.

I was told by a trainer in the paddock once, that my horse needed to come down 1lb for a 0-70 in a weeks time and to give it too much to do, and just finish in the middle. Trainer put up the wrong guy, I owed him nothing to stop his horse and I came 3rd on the horse beaten around a length. Trainer gave me a bollocking, but as I politely said to him, don't ask me to drive 150 miles for one ride not to try on one, it won't happen.

Fair play Dom, if you were an honest jock.

@Pablo-Fanque

As I've said a million times, I could have had a far more successful and longer career if I was bent, I wasn't and therefore my career dried up. I didn't stop horses. If the orders were to stop one, I wouldn't, if that meant losing rides but keeping integrity, so be it. There are plenty of riders who were happy to stop horses left right and centre, I wasn't one of them.

Even if told you would get the ride in the 0-70 the following week?

Havlin has a similar job to Heffernan, though I would have Heffernan any day over him when he's on the 'one'.

@Swardean

Trust no one in this game Swardean. I won twice on a horse on the bounce for a trainer I rode out for, and was promised the ride in a decent race on it's next start. Was still jocked off for Spencer, then told it was the owners choice, asked the owners and they told me was trainers decision, wanted a big race jockey.

Concentrate on the now, as the future means nothing. Promises from owners and trainers in racing mean absolutely nothing and are never kept.

no offence intended, but as i have no idea what your name is, so i have no way of knowing if that is true or not

To break through as a jockey you will need to have come through an apprenticeship with a yard.   And as an apprentice you will not get very far in this game without doing what you are told.

So everyone is well versed into how things work at a very early stage in their career

@Swardean

I was fortunate as an apprentice to ride for a big trainer who gave me a lot of chances. It took me a few years to lose my claim but I was never in a yard that had non jiggers .
