Do Ballydoyle have an Atlas and History book to hand when naming their horses ? just looking at tomorrows decs and we have Sidney Opera House, Norway , and Japan ! and that's just in one race. Its getting boring and lazy. What with the Arabs calling so many horses names beginning with M which are hard to get the tongue around let alone remember I'm longing for the jump season to come .

The Pentagon -who hasn't raised a gallop this year -was named because John McShain who built The Pentagon owned Gladness an early superstar at Ballydoyle.Hard to think of a Ballydoyle Group 1 or Classic winner that isn't well named.

have you noticed how very few classic winning horses have bad names?

golden fleece, dancing brave, elgransenor all roll off the tongue. by contrast I can't recall many horses called "mrwhippy'sicecream" winning the derby Crazy
Report lewisham ranger • September 1, 2018 11:54 AM BST
take that norway, japan maiden you were referring to earlier. I can already pretty much dismiss the whole field as not amounting to much, as none of them have good names. Crazy

Derrick Smith in an interview said he likes to name his horses after places he has visited and successful made money.

Note in his article he said he had one of his most successful business trips to Japan.

Japan makes his debut today at the Curragh.

Tempestatefloresco is a fine Latin motto. The problem is that you're only allowed a maximum of 18 characters, including spaces, for naming a thoroughbred. Hence it's registered as all one word, when it should be two: Tempestate Floresco - (In) The Storm (I) Flourish. Which would look less confusing.

There was a similar one in training with Mary Reveley in the 1990s, called Stoproveritate. The difference is that that one could and should have been registered as three words: Sto Pro Veritate - (I) Stand For Truth.

Rothmanmike:

Earlier winners Sam, Lap Dog, Spaniel, Blink Bonny and Santa Claus would sound just as bad.
Report kevo • September 1, 2018 9:24 PM BST
Clement Freud once criticized the naming of Sea Bird, he said they might as well have called it Gulls Dropping. That was before the Derby.
Report RothmanMike • September 1, 2018 10:55 PM BST
Oldgit, nevertheless don't think any of those would have beaten Nijinsky, although Santa Claus would have given it a race.

I remember a horse called J Cheever Loophole about 25-30years ago now, Walter Swinburn won on it a couple of times, now that name has stuck in my mind for some reason. I must google that name.

My sole reason for successful lay threads (at times) is i simply pick poorly named horses, it's obviously a foolproof system that could make us millionaires by this time next year.

Pink Dogwood (my Friday lay) the 11/10f trained by AOB is a tyical example. How can a filly named with such distain be expected to be a Queen of the turf.

I suspect Sue Magnier has one in the garden, but if she just wanted to name one starting with the letter P, something along the lines of Petite Etoil or Pawneese would have been much better, or even Pebbles at a push.

I imagine that Pink Dogwood is named after the hole at Augusta national that has the same name.

The most true test of a name's greatness manifests itself in the list of US Triple Crown winners. With the exception of Gallant Fox of course:

1919     Sir Barton
1930     Gallant Fox
1935     Omaha
1937     War Admiral
1941     Whirlaway
1943     Count Fleet
1946     Assault
1948     Citation
1973     Secretariat
1977     Seattle Slew
1978     Affirmed
2015     American Pharoah
2018     Justify

The Green Monkey was doomed to failure with a name like that, named after a golf course apparently. Bought for $16m dollars and was beaten in three racecourse appearances in America and was then retired to stud. Stud career was also disappointing.
Report RothmanMike • September 2, 2018 9:53 AM BST
Apparently Susan Magnier, principal namer of the Ballydoyle horses, has already reserved names for future horses and historically those horses
with the greatest potential are given the most prestigious names.
Would love to know what names remain in her locker for upcoming 2-y-os.

The US Triple Crown lost its credibility when they allowed a misspelled winner in American Pharoah.

I don't think the 'lads' had an input in the naming Wink

Two colts are GODZILLA and HARPO MARX

Can anyone beat Muff Diver or **** Ash Lil ?
Some ordinary names stick in the mind forever. In the 50's we had Flying Officer and The Plumbers Mate.
Airborne was a popular name for the 1946 Derby Winner. Amazing that it started at the price it did.

@Oldgit1

I think that is slightly wrong, basically they wont be allowed free travel, so will need to apply for a visa to travel and possibly enter quarantine so therefore given the time constraints it may not become suitable for foreign horses to come to the UK to race and vice versa.

No different to Dubai, with our horses going over, I would imagine it would work the same.
Report lewisham ranger • September 2, 2018 1:00 PM BST
flowering peach is another hole at augusta (I presume Magnier has played the course.)

I think we can deduce she is probably a similiar ability level to pink dogwood.
