New regional director Dickon White aiming to get Haydock back on track

By David Carr
UPDATED 12:05PM, AUG 24 2018

Dickon White has been appointed regional director for Jockey Club Racecourses’ North West and one of his main tasks is likely to be boosting fortunes at Haydock, his former track.

White has been JCR's group betting director since 2012 and in a 20-year career with the organisation he also spent six years as managing director at Haydock.

That track will come under his wing in his new role, along with Aintree and Carlisle, and White is determined to improve fortunes there.

Haydock's crowds took a downturn in the recession and have not picked up as might have been hoped in the years since.

"We're in a challenging economic environment at the moment and if you look at Haydock itself in terms of its location it's in a challenging area and that has to be something we need to address," said White.

"In terms of the quality of the racing, I think there's been some fantastic racing at Haydock and I've every confidence we can get things right again. It's not down to any one factor that things haven't quite been going as the course would have wanted. It's an opportunity for us all to come together and move things forward."

White's predecessor John Baker is to be managing director at Aintree.

Reflecting on his new role, White said: "I think one of my strengths is leading teams and bringing people together. For any business to be successful, you need to have everyone working together with the same objectives.

"I'm not saying that hasn't happened but I'll come in and evaluate everything and ensure that going forward we have a clear vision, not just for Haydock Park but for the whole of the region.

"We want to get quality racing, we want to get people coming racing again, we want to see people having smiles on their faces when they come racing – that's really important."

What a perverse appointment, then ...

Given that Dickon will have been primarily responsible for turning Haydock into an open-ar PUB - instead of being a RACECOURSE in the FIRST PLACE.... during his previous tenure

Yet anotherJOCKEY CLUB appointment 'of the finest order' CryHappy

It's especially "challenging" when you put the tatts entry charge up to £28 per person.  I also think it would be a good idea to stop pi$$ing off your annual members by having so many one enclosure days.

£15 in the silver wasnot.

one thing for certain he will do a better job than the previous clown, the cost of entry and as wasnot said the one enclosures is getting almost everyones backs up.the potential haydock has is huge.

How the f00k is Haydock a 'challenging area'? It's half a mile from a motorway junction, within an hours drive of a population of millions, hardly any competition and they've still f00ked it up for years. This plank sounds just as clueless.
