Legendary trainer Mick O'Toole has passed away aged 86.

O'Toole was best known as the trainer of Gold Cup winner Davy Lad and saddled eight winners at the Cheltenham festival.

He also tasted Classic success on the Flat with Irish 2,000 Guineas winner Dickens Hill, who was runner-up in the Derby at Epsom and the Curragh behind Troy.

He is survived by his wife Una, son Ciaran, one the country's leading jockeys' agents, and daughter Mags, the highly respected bloodstock agent.

Among those to post tributes on Twitter were Barry Geraghty and HRI Chief Executive Brian Kavanagh.

Kavanagh tweeted:-
"A sad day for Irish Racing with the news of the passing of Mick O’Toole. A great trainer and a real character in every sense of the word - Micko was larger than life and always had a funny story to tell. Deepest sympathies to Úna, Ciaran, Margaret and all his family and friends."

Geraghty posted:-

"Very sad news to hear of Mick O'Toole's passing a true Legend of our Sport and an unbelievable character on and off the track. Condolences to all his Family RIP"

I liked Mick, he made no secret that  he knew what the game was about! On one cccasion, think it must have been Davy Lad, thought Micko Boy was about to give the Queen Mother, who was doing the presentation, a hug, but thankfully he restrained himself. Hope the couple are having a giggle about that now!

He started as a greyhound trainer.

A good flat and jumps trainer. Dessie Hughes rode for him for a long time

Only saw him recently at Fairyhouse he looked well, he was well able to climb the steps at Punchestown . A huge loss to Irish racing. R.I.P. Mick...

Very sad news. A great trainer and a great man. He trained some terrific horses but Our Albert was my favourite. RIP Mr O`Toole.

Pity there was no internet or racing channels in those days. We never really got to know some great characters especially Irish ones as we rarely saw any live racing from there. Some great pieces on the Post website. RIP.
