Load it into a horse box on a warm day...send it out on a gruelling  eight hour road journey from Berkshire to Glasgow .............and all in an attempt to get £5k back  , and a fairly meaningless win on the board.

Then an eight hour journey back home  presumably........not my idea of  fun.

why its an absolute cert.

8 hours from Newbury to Hamilton ???? In a milk float maybe.

They will have used a little 2 box, which wont be limited and will go 70-80 the whole way, it's all a road and motorway from Newbury to Hamilton.

Baldings yard is just off the A34, follow that all the way to the M40, then pick up the M6 Toll, and M6 all the way up.

If you have a stop will prob take you 6 hours, but could easily do it in 5 to 5 and a half hours in a 2 box.
Report Callisto-moon • August 21, 2018 1:13 PM BST
yer get the old box upto 80 mph so the horse gets to love speed.
Report domino14 • August 21, 2018 1:14 PM BST
Plus Richgit

They will have gone up yesterday, left about 12.00 or 1pm, and got there 6.30-7.30

Horse settled in overnight, and gone for a nice 30 minute leg stretch this morning.

If you think that horse has travelled up today when running in the 1.20, you're very misinformed.
Report domino14 • August 21, 2018 1:15 PM BST
@Callisto

Believe it or not, most box drivers don't really give a damn about their speed in these two boxes. HGV's are limited to 54 or 56mph, but I've seen many of these little 2 boxes winging it alone at 80-90mph on the motorways.

Dom.....I don't think that at all..( been there, done that)......and the 8hours only  came from AA  traffic watch.

Whatever, it's still a sign of the times ,....desperation, with a yearling costing so much

£625,000, what part of its pedigree makes it worth that amount.

Disagree entirely, it's a Plus 10 maiden which it's owners will have been qualified for, so therefore instead of £5,450 for winning the race they will get £15,450 and it's a qualifier for a valuable race later in the season, which it is now qualified for, to try and take down a decent pot.

I wouldn't call it desperate, I would call it good planning and maximising your return for your clients by Balding, without needing to give a well bred and expensive 2yo a hard race.

You da man
Report gutfeeling • August 21, 2018 1:33 PM BST
If you find the right race then distance is no object as long as you plan correctly.

Saying that if I get a call asking if I fancy a trip to Ayr on a overnight I tend to hang up.
Report richgit • August 21, 2018 1:36 PM BST
Gut.....not bad in Ayr, if you stay at Turnberry
Report domino14 • August 21, 2018 1:36 PM BST
Ayr was always a dive, western meeting was a bit a fun as a lot of your up there though.

Hamilton not a bad night out and there is the fun fair near by !

Worse overnight stop when riding had to be Redcar, what a dump that place is. It's like it was bombed in the 40s and never recovered.
Report gutfeeling • August 21, 2018 1:41 PM BST
Chepstow overnight is pretty grim, Stable staff accommodation stinks of bleach & vomit and reminded me of growing up in the 70's with the decor being very avocado.

I once did Ffos Las in 1 day with 3 runners in a box limited to 55mph, Could've been worse the M25 could've had roadworks and lane closures that evening when I hit it at midnight...Oh wait it f@cking did.
Report domino14 • August 21, 2018 1:42 PM BST
Mainly based in Lambbourn, Chepstow was normally after 4 lots job lol
From Newmarket it would still be a ride first couple of lots and on road for 9am. Don't think ever considered stopping over at Chepstow lol.

Oh, happy days.....I remember them as an owner.

Being persuaded to travel to Carlisle/Catterick/Newbury/Bath. etc etc.......and then driving home dejected and poorer.

Worse still, NOT being advised to travel to York / Southwell/ Brighton/ Haydock and others,.. when the particular bladdy horse went and won.

That's why I packed it all in....too much grief.

@Richgit

Could be worse Rich, I left 5.30am one day to go to Catterick to ride two for Dandy Nicholls, pre social media days and all that, ground was soft, Didn't know had rained all night and I got to Catterick just after 10am to be riding in the 1st, thought would go for a little run round the track. As got into the track, there was water everywhere and the track was covered in puddles and still raining, stewards called the meeting off around 11am, but they would have known long before then it was unraceable. Long drive back to Lambourn, to be back for around 5pm. Wasted day and out of pocket !

@Domino

There was a protest planned in the area against Nato or some such thing so lots of roads were being closed on the day so we took the decision to go overnight rather than get caught up in any fracas...Plus it was a absolute cert so that sweetened the pill.

Hateful unlucky place for me.( More than once )

Although stayed overnight at very nearby pub, near to some bridge.....grotty indeed,.. but the dining room attached to it was like a huge baronial hall....that was memorable.

Or you could have bought a share in a horse after it won a race.

Had it in training with the champion trainer.

Wait patiently and fork out handsomely whilst it got over various 'niggles'

When it makes the track follow it over the edge of a cliff as the jockey/trainer keep telling you why it would win next time out.

Long drives to 'lesser' racetracks with only a parking space & free tea & biscuit to warm your cockles after it got stuffed out of sight again and be lucky to scrape a couple of hundred quid in prize money.

Then watch it's brother win a G1 at the Aintree Festival..........

.......that foray into ownership was a long held dream and a living nightmare Laugh

Or Pontefract, A worse lead up you'll never find.
Report domino14 • August 21, 2018 2:05 PM BST
@Charwell

Reminds me of a horse I foolishly bought 2 years ago. Went nicely for Stoutes at home but never raced, had little issues, so I paid a cheap fee for it in 2015 as a unraced 3yo, having rode it a fair bit as a 2yo and liked him. We had it with friends who trained and lets just say 3 years later it's an unraced 6yo and now my daughters pony !!!!

@Gutfeeling

When apprentice I led up at Ponte loads, Barry loved the place, but for me it was not the worse lead up by a mile. I raise your Pontefract with Nottingham or Warwick (in the 90s before the stables moved) when you had to walk for bloody miles up the track to get to the pre parade ring and if it rained you got drenched. Least Ponte was only up over the golf course.

Carlisle was also a right pain when the stables were on the home bend, especially with one pulling your arms out and acting up, but luckily only led one up there when riding in a later race.

I remember riding in the kids race at Nottingham once, not even for Barry and Barry having two runners. I saw myself down for 1 lot and was told I could go in the horse box, I thought brill, they had left out the minor detail of a double lead up before my ride before we were on route to Nottingham, I also had to get a lift home as the runners were in the 2nd and 5th race, and my ride was race 7 and box driver left without me !!!

Charwell someone I know brought their first horse last year, A 2yo lovely chestnut filly, Well bred moved nicely and was everything you'd want really...Anyhow it's half sister won a listed race abroad and before ours was due to run the owner was offered 25k ( They paid 5k ) and they turned it down, Within a few days of this it did a leg ( Jockey rode it and blasted it up the gallops when it was a half speed 4 3 piece )so needed some time off,
Threw it in a field for 6 weeks and it came back looking like a giraffe it had grown in all the wrong areas...and then it's wind started to go...and then it grew again so we had to back off...It finally running now as a 3yo and it's current rating of 45 would be 20 to 30lbs too high for it.

The joys eh

Was going to mention Nottingham, Lovely lead up in the rain with a 2yo colt who sh@ts himself at everything and you'd have no chance with if it took you on...Yes I've done it a few times, Owners & trainers food is good though Cool

Was my whole life for 20 years mate !!

I think it was only when I was 16-19 when I could do 7st 5lb and eat what I wanted it was fun. By 20, I was claiming 3 or 5 and most rides were 8st claim 3/5lb. By the time my claim went I was wasting and throwing up daily and spending hours in steam baths or driving to track in a sweat suit with heaters on at 30 degrees, just to do 7st 12 to 8st 2lb, which were a lot of rides until the weights started to be increased.
Report gutfeeling • August 21, 2018 2:23 PM BST
F@ck that to put it mildly, I guess you still are very careful about your weight too ?

A ex jockey / mate who stays with us quite a bit even though he just rides out is still always checking his weight, Goes to the gym daily, Runs and minds his food...he just can't ever get past it mentally.

His first rules ride was the Epsom dash, Said he closed his eyes as the stalls opened and the horse veered across half the field and when he opened his eyes there was 2f to run Laugh
Report domino14 • August 21, 2018 2:26 PM BST
I'm about 9st now.

I swim around 60-100 lengths of the local pool a day, and do boxercise 2 nights a week. Mainly to keep fit, seen a lot of my retired mates turn into mid fourties fatties haha

But eat correctly now, 3 meals a day, but not massive ones and not really much junk food, although odd take away here and there.

Rarely drink as cant really with the kids but weight probably better now than ever been haha, Imagine if I made a comeback I could do 8st 8lb or so without having to waste too much.
Report domino14 • August 21, 2018 2:28 PM BST
My first ride was not so kind, 14f apprentice race on the laziest horse in the yard, I was knackered after 6f, he wouldn't have blown a candle out! Got off him having finished well down the field and legs felt like they were gonna buckle, took me 10 minutes to get my breath back to speak ! Learned very quickly that day, I wasn't as fit as I thought I was.
Report gutfeeling • August 21, 2018 2:53 PM BST
Good stuff, Least it's not left a mark and you can enjoy a meal without thinking about that ride in 3 days time.
Report gutfeeling • August 21, 2018 2:56 PM BST
The dreaded leg burn coupled with spaghetti arms with 3f to run, I don't think anyone appreciates how fit you really have to be to ride horses.
Shame they did away with the lads boxing as that's about getting everyone up to fitness, I picked up a apprentice yesterday who was running late for evening stables, Chugging away on a smoke drinking a can of coke..Oh to be young again.
