Never heard of Sportspesa, but given they are from Kenya, I personally wouldn't be sending anyone a wage slip, which would show your tax code, NI number and so on.

If copy of a bank statement not suffice, I would just close the account myself.

Indeed, sounds extremely dodgy; prudent to close account than oblige.

Spesa is actually part of a group of 4/5 bookies. They share the same prices and the same hapless CS monkeys.

they are licensed by the gambling commission who are clamping down on problem gambling and suspicious gambling.  I can see these kinds of requests happening a lot more in the future.

I assume the OP is ahead with spesa which is why they have requested this.

This stuff all came out at the same time as the FOBTS stake cut was proposed

4.17. The review identifies several risks linked to operators holding
insufficient information about their customers, which includes their
ability to effectively detect problem gambling or criminal activity on their
platforms. The Commission will introduce a new customer due
diligence requirement meaning that operators will have more
information about their customers at an earlier stage.

..."gambling commission...suspicious gambling..."

But they turned a blind eye to the persistent high-roller losers...

They can't do that anymore though, that is the point.  They have to find out where the high roller's money is coming from.

What if you're a professional gambler or self employed and don't have wage slips.

that's the worrying point - if they have to get rid of whales, they might decide to get rid of sharks as well.

would it not make much more sense to let these checks take place before you deposit and bet?

At the moment the onus is on the customer/punter to prove their viability and suitability as a customer/punter and not vice versa. I think the role should be reversed.

Some bookies have had big (millions of pounds) fines lately for letting customers lose money they can't afford, which may explain why they want to know what you earn.

One of the Racing Post chappies got caught recently because his staking was flagged up as all over the place, even though (if we believe him) he is on top.

Ramruma,
Perhaps that's why so many come on here saying that bookies will only let them bet in pennies?
They're all pretty well skint and can't show where the money comes from.

So next time they start a thread saying they've been knocked back by a bookie - well believe what you want to believe.

@Dr Crippen

You clearly have no problem believing bookies will knock back punters to save a couple of grand.

So why is it a stretch to think they would also take measures to avoid losing millions of pounds in fines?

Corals were fined £2 million
Hills £6 million
888 £7 million

That's what has concentrated their minds.
