Agree .….not much of a racing brain there - plodded along trapped on the inside - then with 10 yards to go decided it was better to probably come out took rather a long time for that penny to drop

I personally couldn't and wouldn't defend that ride, even as an ex jockey. That ride was either completely inept and devoid of brain cells or his Xmas has just been paid for and he is utterly and morally corrupt.

This race craft needs fixing , trainers just exploit these apprentices for cheap wins.
Easy to fix , all apprentices should only be allowed to ride in 'apprentice only' races until say 10 winners or 50 rides

Absolutely. I was asked to stop a horse once, and told the trainer in the parade I wouldn't deliberately keep it out the frame, I was warned if I was in the 4 I would never ride for said trainer again. The horse wasn't good enough anyway but I gave it my all and finished 6th.
On another occasion I was asked to ride a horse who liked to make the running from the rear, I refused and finished 3rd. I didn't lead but sat 4th early on.
I was 100% whiter than white, I made a couple of errors when riding but I would not give a horse a run, or stop one, my career was limited enough as it is, without getting a rep of being a stopping jockey.
I always told my agent, if the trainer wants it to have a run I would rather ride 4 lots at home than have 6 rides on a afternoon where none are off.
I always tried to ride to orders unless they were putaway orders. I always studied my rides form, spoke to jocks who had rode the horses before and when racing replays became a normal thing on the internet I tried to watch how my rides liked to be ridden.
I never did stop a horse and never would.
I once rode a horse that hated the whip, I didn't pick it up one day and was beaten narrowly, I was slated by punters and press saying it should have won, I messed up and gave it a bad ride, too confident. It dented me, and I rode the horse a week or so later, stupidly so angered by critics, I gave the horse the strongest ride I had ever given a horse, and must have hit it near on 20 times in the final furlong and a half, it curled up underneath me and went backwards having cruised into 4th at that point. I know what I done cost the horse any chance of winning, but I was out to prove a point. The owner and trainer were livid but when I explained my reasons they kind of understood. I wouldn't say that day, I stopped said horse, I just done what I knew the horse would dislike to prove the armchair critics wrong, that was the only time I feel my riding was wrong for a horse and it's chance.
You could count on two hands the riders in the weighing room who were as straight as I was, and there would probably only be 1 or 2 of them still riding. I never had punters, never had an interest and rarely talked about my rides chances to anyone, including lads in the weighing room, I tried to keep quiet and let my riding do the talking. Some jocks are never off their phone and probably have a punter in every town in the UK. There's 4/5 riders riding now, I wouldn't ever bet and I wouldn't trust them on a group horse in a seller, and they aren't the ones most punters talk about. But no I won't name them as it's not right to do so.

When I started out, as an apprentice your first ten rides had to be in apprentice only races, or until you rode a winner and the jockey club who ran things back then (before the BHA) decided if they thought you were capable to ride against pros. I've never been sure why the rule was removed.
I know one lad who rode a winner on his 2nd ride, and still had to ride in 10 before he rode against the pros. I also know another rider who looked poor in his first 10 rides, he was told he wouldn't be able to ride against pros for another 10 rides and if he wasn't deemed up to standard then his licensed would be reviewed. He went on to be a top class rider, but the grounding he had served him well.
I'm not saying it's easy to get a license nowadays as I know they are very tough on the fitness side of things and practical assessment at the racing school, but in my day it was very hard to get rides, even attached to a decent stable, you would have 3/4 other lads in the yard with a license all fighting over the same small batch of horses. I spent mornings painting stables, cleaning the bosses car, doing the gardening, picking stones off the gallops, going to the paper shop at breakfast to get the boss his paper, even polishing his shoes and sometimes tacking up the jockeys horses, just to show how hard working I was to try and get ahead.
I went to a yard last year and I was shocked to know that the apprentice didn't have to muck out and was allowed to leave after 2 lots to go racing at Sandown, when they were in the 2pm, and this was in Lambourn. It was only 9.30 am !!! I would have been made to ride out until near enough 12 in my day. Trainers are far too soft on apprentices nowadays, which is odd given a lot of these trainers were apprentices in the same era as me, and knew how tough it was, as Cardenden will confirm, I suspect he was in a similar situation as me when he started out.

You asked me a question, I answered it honestly, if you chose not to believe what I said that's your decision. If you notice my rides did dry up, it's why I went abroad. I also had a great job for a yard up north who promised me the world, but then expected me to ride non jiggers and I refused, they quickly let me know I wouldn't get many rides, and I moved to Newmarket to work for two of the most honest, kindest and most decent trainers I ever came across. My career probably suffered by my honestly and by me not being willing to be a sheep, but that didn't concern me. Better to be a rider with no rides and integrity than a stopping jockey in my book.

I had 3 agents in my career, one when I started off as an apprentice, but my boss didn't feel he was doing that well for me and put me with another agent who handled other riders at the yard. I then moved to another agent when I moved to Newmarket as they had more links in that area than the agent I used throughout the first part of my career. None of my agents ever had a problem with me, as they knew the rides I wanted and didn't want and at the same time wouldn't whinge and shout if I wasn't riding. Being at a couple of big yards whose stable jockeys were wanted by a lot of yards definitely helped my career. As they would ring my agent and when the stable jockey wasn't available for a fancied horse, they had the chance to fight my corner and put my name forward when many wouldn't have rung up for me.
I couldn't think of anything worse than being on Richard Hales books who I suspect Cardenden was with. Over 35 jockeys and 2/3 of the best northern apprentices and the top 2/3 northern jocks, being a small jockey on his books would be very difficult to get a look in. Being on an agents book who had 4 riders, two of them top jockeys definitely was hugely beneficial.

If you read enough posts on this site, you would know who I was. You can think what you like, I won't lose sleep over it. But don't ask questions if you don't like the answers, and also don't look to critique on something you know clearly very little about. No offence intended.

I have worked in racing and race ridden all my working life until 2014 and seen loads and loads of bent jockeys, trainers, owners and idiotic punters and you Michael59 are an idiotic punter and a PRICK, and if the rest of the forumites are happy fine, but I really think you are an idiotic punter and a PRICK.

Next time you go racing at any London track, feel free to Pm me the night before and I'll gladly come and meet you the next day on course. I'll even ring a mate riding at the meeting and save you the entry fee.

Michael59 I get what your saying if he used to be a jockey why wouldn't you just say who you are!!! Tbh I saw one thread who mentioned him by name wether true or not I'd never ferking heard of him and I've been betting 40 years. So if that's his real name he wasn't much of a jockey. Appreciate there a lot of names you wouldn't remember but judging by the stats that said thread gave out I'm surprised I don't remember him. Seems a bit odd to say I'm an ex jockey but can't tell you who I am or I will have to kill you pmsl

I get you wont name any bent jockies etc but you can name the 100% genuine ones you talk of?
If you had a horse you really fancied, who would be the jockies youd like on them?

The obvious one is SDS, not saying he won't give one a bad ride (he did one last night) but between him and Andrea Atzeni I actually think they ride for the punters, they do and give all they can, I would never have any doubts about backing a horse they are riding.
Dane O'Neill is very underrated and very honest, may not be as driven as he once was, as things are a bit easier for him these days, but definitely straight.
SDS and AA weren't really known to me when I was riding, but from when I was, I would categorically say there is only 3 I would trust from my riding days still going, one of them is Dane O'Neill, the other two are Luke Morris and William Carson who is a seriously underused and underrated rider.
I would run out of toes and fingers to name the ones I wouldn't trust and there are a number of others I couldn't gauge an opinion either way.

Yeah nice one michael59. Had a bit of banter over a **** ride Georgia cox gave a haggis horse other night mother ferker was 4/6 and Dom said she did nowt wrong lmao. I didn't bet in race but didn't agree rhought she could have used the whip more, fed up of been mugged by jockeys who drop hands when they can't win and end up not even getting a place. Lots of punters do each way it's a disgrace.

George retired but I liked him as a rider, really nice guy as well.
Seb, also retired, I wouldn't say he was bent at all, but he wasn't very dedicated and unless it was a steering job, he wouldn't lets say go all out to try and win and as he got heavier and less interested, he was happy just to pick up the riding fee. In his hay day he was a brilliant rider, as a person I didn't know him too well, but I wouldn't have said he had a huge amount of friends in the weighing room.

Luke has the disadvantage of being wanted by a number of trainers on the all weather and to some extent on the turf whose horses lets say just aren't very good and as with any jockey, it's not fun riding bad horses, so you can get demoralised but I can't count many I would ever say I would question whether Luke tried to win on it or not. Obviously the few he actually has to ride of Prescotts in their first three starts over inadequate trips whilst being trained with 3 days on the gallops and 3 days on the horse walker some may say aren't triers but effectively they are trying in races they physically can't actually win.
