When I mentioned to you that 30k/100k bet last night the main purpose of it (and, yes, I did fancy it) was to see if you could realistically stick that bet on on course. I don't know if there are any rails books at Carlisle, (especially at a night meeting) so the point is could you or anyone else for that matter get matched?

Royal Ascot and Cheltenham perhaps but would there have been a book there to accommodate such a bet in your opinion?

It's a while since I've been to Carlisle steve but just cannot imagine a bookie, and even a rails one at that with a message besides his board....'Maximum take out 30k'.

And remember, they might only get 30 seconds notice and doubt if enough liquidity to handle that type of bet. (IMHO)

sparrow, the good old fashioned way....cash. That said if I put that type of bet on and I knew the bookie I would accept a cheque for payment.

I don't know if it happens now but in the glory days a punter and bookie who knew each other well would only have to tell the book....for example... 15k to 5k a 3/1 poke and things could be squared up later one way or another.

I used to like the shout, nod, wink agreements between regular bookies and punters at the dogs.

Sadly the book who took him on is now deceased but his daughter still has a few pitches but no idea if she carried on her father's tradition of laying JP.

I know what you mean Denzil but although it still happens at the dogs, it's a practice becoming far less frequent.

I can safely say his daughter would not be carrying on the tradition of laying JP's bets.
