I have tried to place win bets with this lot at £10 per horse and sometimes managed to get the whole £10 on, but usually the stake is restricted to, say some odd figure of £9.81 (for example). I had a 40/1 winner with them last Saturday ('Cosmelli' at Newcastle), and since then my £10 stakes are reduced to a lot less than £10 (£0.77 for example). My question is this: is the scale of reduction the same for everyone, or does it vary from punter to punter?

Moke is pointless even trying if you do try to put a bet on you will inevitably be disappointed just bet elsewhere.

@liberator - ok, but is that the same for everyone who has an account with them? If they do that to every client, what is the point of them existing? I mean it's not a business if they only accept pennies as stake amounts?

Of course not Moke. If you are betting sportsbook selctively for prices then like any other online book you will be restricted.
Some folks dont have a clue re price and will just take whatever.
if its 3/1 sportsbook and 4/1 on exchange they will let you bet all day as much as you want
if its 7/2 sportsbook 10/3 exchange they will be on to you in no time @ all and restrict to pennies.

geoff m - ah ok, I didn't realise that they compare their prices with the exchange prices, but having said that, I did a little experiment last night and checked what they would except on a different variety of horses and races and they were restricting ALL the bets that I tried down to less than £1 per horse, apart from some odds on selections that I tested where they would accept between £3 and £4 on those. So the restrictions were right across the board on ALL the UK races for the next day, irrespective of what I chose!

Maybe very few punters were placing bets for today's racing, but I can't believe that that is true just for one day. So that goes against what you are saying about BFS comparing prices with the exchanges. If that were true, then some prices would be obtainable on some horses, and not on others, but I found that ALL stakes were restricted on ALL selections in ALL races!

what price was cosmelli here when you had £10 x 40/1 ?  if it was more than 40 why not take that ... if it was under 40 you've beaten the exchange meaning your sb account was toast.

@hulk23 - Sorry, I made a slight error in my opening statement. I had to split the bet between two bookies to get the full £10 each way at 66/1 the night before. Skylight and BFS were the only ones offering 66/1 the night before, however I only managed to get 40/1 with a third bookie on my e/w Lucky 63 at the stake that I wanted.

The interesting thing though was that there was a rule 4 on the bet - 10% with one bookie and 15% with the other, even though the bets were placed at pretty much the same time 20 hours earlier! How come there was a discrepancy then between the two rule 4 values?

Do these people ever consider betting on the exchange or are they all subject to the Premium Charge?

if i'd backed a winner at 66/1 the night before on the sb (sp 40/1) i would just assume i'm restricted to buttons, wouldn't even bother looking ...

@sparrow - I am considering it - I may have to, depending on what happens in the future. The PC does put me off to be honest, but it's something that I am looking into.

when you backed it at 66/1 on sb what was it here to back, must have been 80 plus (for no money but you only wanted a tenner) ?

@hulk23 - sorry, I didn't check the exchange price as I haven't used the exchanges for well over 10 years now, and when they bought in that PC nonsense, that REALLY put me off the whole exchange thing.

I find it hard to believe anyone would back a horse at double figures with a bookmaker. And what percentage of people on here actually pay the PC?

Can you imagine going up to an on course bookie and asking for a £10 e/w bet on a 40/1 shot and the bookie saying, sorry mate, we can only accept £0.77 each way on that one!

They wouldn't stay in business very long I would have thought!

The other thing with exchanges is that one can't do multiple bets with them or can you? If you can, I'm not sure how one would go about doing that. I do either one of the following every day: an each way Lucky 63 or Lucky 31, or Lucky 15, or a patent or a double. Is it possible to do those on the exchanges? Excuse my ignorance on that matter, but I wouldn't know how to go about doing those. I stick with the regular bookies - better the devil you know as they say!

Also, the other thing that put me off the exchanges was the extremely low prices (1/10th of the odds in some cases) for placed bets compared with 1/4 or 1/5th of the odds with the regular bookmakers.

I don't think you can do multiples on the exchange. You can't really compare the place markets here with the old traditional EW bet but you do have more flexibility by being able to have for example 20% to win and 80% to place rather than being stuck with level stakes.

£1 lucky 15 on the exchange:

£8 on sel 1
£4 + 50% returns from 1 on sel 2
£2 + 25% returns from 1 + 50% returns from 2 on sel 3
£1 + 12.5% returns from 1 + 25% returns from 2 + 50% returns from 3 on sel 4

Shrewdie restricted to pennies.

That's modern day "bookmaking" for you.

Didn't come as a shock mokegibboni.

Thanks for that mouse, but isn't doing it that way a bit messy and a bit of a hassle and you need to monitor your results as you go along throughout the afternoon and maybe evening racing as well? What happens if you go out for the whole day and you are not able to monitor your results and you are not in a position to place bets throughout the day/evening? Placing a multiple bet the night before is just one transaction (one bet) - easy!

Placing an each way Lucky 15 with a regular bookmaker is just one bet - a fit and forget bet if you like and one just needs to check the result after the final leg has run with no messing about in between!

But for possible future reference, your message may turn out to be useful and I'll copy and paste it to keep as a record just in case I may need to do it that way in the future.

Was you paying PC charge Moke??
By:
mokegibboni
When: 06 Jul 18 12:31
geoff m - no, I actually stopped using them long before the PC charge was brought in. It's just that when they DID include it, that just gave me one more reason not to use them (together with the other reasons as listed below).

I'm not in a position at the moment where I have to use them, but if it ever comes to the crunch and I have no alternative, then obviously I will need to reassess my betting strategy. I have been thinking about that recently, but the thing that I like about the multiple bets is that by doing them every betting day of the year, I get a decent large return on the average about once or twice per year. I basically hit the bookies for 6 when they're least expecting it on the very rare times that it happens.

Moke, I aint saying it's ideal, I'm just saying that's the way you could go about it if you had to. Best to set up a spreadsheet to keep the figures right, and then you could even play a super monster quadruple goliath, spread over several days.

Mouse - yes, I understand that (LOL at your last sentence). Anyway, thanks for the input. All polite contributions are most welcome of course.

Talking of spreadsheets - I've kept very careful records since I started my betting after I retired at the end of 2014. Tables of daily/monthly expenditure (stakes), graphs to go with them with ROI (daily and average figures) calculated etc.etc.
