It was Knopfler's father who was Jewish. His mother wasn't so strictly speaking he doesn't count and he moved to Newcastle at 7 anyway..

Salmon Spray. There was an often empty seat in front of me in the old East stand at Stamford Bridge. Various people used to use it and sometimes Marty had it. People used to wait for him to do something outrageous but he never did. A young Michael Crawford was another regular in that section. Often used to see Sidney Taffler in a nearby betting shop going through agonies in the Jewish style over horses he'd backed.

I'd forgotten about Tafler tbh. Used to be in everything when I was young/teens. He died relatively young though.

He had a nice looking wife in Joy Shelton who had a long acting career including as the Wife of PC 49 on the radio.
Sydney's sister was married to Bond movies director Lewis Gilbert and that got Sidney parts as the tanker captain in The Spy Who Loved me and some of his other movies.

I used to see him in betting shops on the Finchely Rd.  Always quiet probably saving it for his act.  Often had a very nice girl in tow.
