Been thinking about my staking overnight and it has just been stupid to be honest. I was betting more and more during a good run and this was thanks to my three football bets placed in April, but lost a fair bit over the last few days. Looked at accounts last night and have around 4000 outside of Betfair, £8500 roughly in Betfair and use of around 10K in cash which I use in my local Lads. That's my total betting. Depleted by around 12K in the last week !!!

There are clearly some knowledgeable guys on here who make it pay, I don't have the time or the internet speeds to make in running a possible, but how do some of you who  do really well bet.

I looked over last 4 months of bets, and 43.6% of my Win market bets have won, Of all my bets 84.2% would have been winners in the Place markets and 93% in the enhanced place markets, but some of these would have imagined would have been very slim odds.

I see people mention the Premium Charge, but I must ask is it really a bad thing? If you are winning x amount and doing well surely you dont mind paying it ? I mean I've found even with plenty of my stakes outside of Betfair getting matched especially in the place market is impossible and even laying horses, unless they are in the first 3 in the betting, unless it's in the last few minutes before the off, it's impossible.

I want to try and get my acc to 10K and just withdraw daily profits above that going forwards.

What would people on here who make it pay, suggest staking wise ?

At present I have been doing roughly 200/400 in a win market and 500/1000 in a place market which has been good when they come in, but I could have 5 of them place of which 1 won, and then one runs a stinker and it takes away around 90% of what I've won.

I've had some decent wins in the last 3 months enabling me to up my stakes, but 2 of these were on Football and the only big win I had on the horses was a horse I had £2400 on at 3/1 called Dance Teacher at Kempton, which won by the skin of it's teeth.

I ain't looking for abuse from this just genuine thoughts ?

A lot of the betting stuff you talk about is alien to me but I am up on my betting by around £6,200 in 18 months on horses and Greyhounds and my football bets I'm a long way in front but I look at that very different to racing. You all may laugh about the Casino wins I have and that I've made money from it, no there is no system but there are really good promotions which Betfair give, and if you use your head with them there is good money to be made without opening yourself up to losses. You can win very big on them but it's the luck of the draw with them, but it's made me a lot of money over the last 18 months. If it wasn't for the VIP offers and promotions I wouldn't bother with it aside from a bit of fun here and there.

I read a lot of people say it's impossible to win pre race on here, why? I have 43% strike rate in win market and 84% strike rate in place market, I have won a small amount but the ROI would prob be less than 2%!! Also my staking is very erratic but I do feel with that sort of strike rate I should be able to make it pay better for me. My problem is when I have a few good winning days I keep upping my stakes, and it's good when you have a couple of good days on larger stakes, but as the last three days have shown, the flip side can wipe out say 2/3 weeks of previous wins.

There's clearly 3/4 of you on this thread who make it pay, so what's your honest suggestions ?

I like to think im a good judge of good judges, i let them do the hard work then if i have confiedence in them i follow them blindly, lazy i know but it works for me.

FWIW, here is my limited input (due to time).

Laying/backing pre-race and making it pay long term is very difficult, i would say only 5% achieve it, maybe even less. There are no systems that i'm aware of.

I wouldn't contemplate betting on football to make it pay, and i very much doubt i could, as much as i love the game. I suspect there are some sports that could be profitable, tennis for example, but i can't comment as i've never tried. Harry Findlay did alright betting on ball games, but came unstuck with a rugby bet he should have traded out at a good profit when he had the chance.

To win at Greyhounds you have to go to the track regularly, or at least have access to videos. I used to own them back in the day, the game wasn't straight then, and i doubt it is today.

Casinos, i haven't got a clue, although i went a few times in the late 80's. Not my thing.

Discipline is, and always has been the number 1 rule. Many don't have it, including me sometimes.

A P/L is necessary, again many don't have them.

I've never tried it, but IR at the track appears to be fruitful, but i doubt it's a licence to print money. It's easy to have fast fingers or make an error of judgement when you only have a split second to decide. There are several experts here on that score.

I do very well on Football. I do a lot of in game lays. I also do a lot of long term bets. Football is not terribly hard to win money on, but it's not fancy prices if you wanna do well.

I do well on the greyhounds. Some good mates of mine have dogs and train dogs and I only lay on the dogs. If I know a dog isn't fancied, I'll happily lay it, even if it's just to win £10-20 when its 8/1 or so. I know it's not for everyone, but if you know it's not likely to win, it helps.

In running in racing would never be an option for me. 3 days a week I'm working and time is limited during race times except at weekends.

The 5% Ghost said is interesting, but I always like to bet 20-30% of stake in win, and 70/80% in place, I look to not lose money mostly, although I went win only on Saxon yesterday but was hit hard with Dali.

How about working out what 5% of your bank would be, then splitting that 20/80 0r 30/70? It ain't rocket science.

unless your discipline and staking is in place there will be no profit longer term.

If you're betting a fiver on a horse in January, and £5k on one in June, then you're staking's out.
If you earn £40k a year and lose £8k on a Saturday, then you're staking's out.
If you've put a bet on that NEEDS to win, and it gives you that horrible feeling in your stomach, then you're staking's out.
If you have to quit gambling once your bank has gone, and your missus won't give you any more pocket money to waste, then betting half your bank means........You've guessed it, then you're staking's out.

Suppose you were on 40% PC and you'd been taxed say 30% extra on your winning run. What then when you hit the losing run? Your overall profit would be minimal (perhaps even a small loss?) and unfortunately they don't do rebates.

I have read enough of doms post for imo to come to the conclusion he will never change. He is a gambler and will never be a long term winning punter.

Personally i think anyone trying to 2nd guess which of O'Briens multitude of talented horses when there are numerous runners in a race has a right job on his hands, the gallops are one thing but the racecourse is another, also remember one trainer saying to me that that he was the only person who knew what weights were going in the saddle bags! This season appears to me that O'Brien has taken over the Johnston mantra of Always trying and with his one son training well bred horses as well and his other son riding many fancied horses it really has become a guessing game.
