What are you on?.  What evidence do you have that these meetings are bad for the horses?  You'll be suggesting we ban Laytown next, particularly if this is another race-meeting you do not understand.

Oh dear!   As several on here know, I am at Laytown nearly every year.....and I did not know it was on a sandy beach.  Sorry my unsophisticated point went entirely over your head.

I'll leave you to your view.   Just to help a bit though, my reference to Laytown was merely to illustrate that unusual racing surfaces are not necessarily damaging to horses. You have taken a view on St Moritz and that is your prerogative.

Rode St Moritz once, never again. Horses run on spikes and you feel like you are going flat out, it's actually a tight track and you hang on for dear life around the bend. It is simply dangerous and known several horses have a fatal injury in the race which results in injury to the rider as well.

I remember Tex - Axile winning a small fortune off this jockey in a multiple i believe at July course a few years back - life changing amount - regarding his new career i actually like him as he is more modern in riding terms (George Baker that is) and is more on the button than say the shark on the other channel not that i dislike him either by the way and a breath of fresh air on the airwaves

Whatever anyone's thoughts are on that kind of racing, to say you have no sympathy for someone who was nearly killed when doing their job is a bit much I think.

Felt absolutely nothing for him..but I did for the poor horse that shouldn't be forced to race on the surface.should be banned .racing on that surface..

Reading some comments it seems that its not only George himself who thinks he was a better jockey than he actually was.

If George Baker was a stone lighter, he'd have been champion jockey a few times, a brilliant jockey with brilliant tactical nous and timing, unlike that other one trick pony Spencer. but even more important is that he's a very nice kind guy.

No doubt George baker is a nice chap.but he made the choice to go over and ride horses in those race conditions.this is not about him being a good jockey..or being a nice guy..its about races horses in those conditions..i notice there isn't many comments on this..

I agree that form of racing is crazy and unethical personally.

As for Baker, no-one should wish massive injuries on anyone. As a jock, he was good but only when he wanted to be, like so many.

I disagree re George and I know him very well. George picked up a lot of rides for trainers on horses with a lot of weight in races, mainly as it meant they weren't carrying much lead. He would have been 8st 12/13 stripped so he would struggle to ride less than 9st without wasting or sitting in a sauna for hours. I was lucky in my career in that I could do 7st 10lb and eat what I wanted, if I was down to ride a horse carrying 9st 7lb, even with a big saddle, I would have been carrying over a stone of lead, With George there would always be less weight on a horses back, as he rarely needed a weight cloth. This is an attraction to some trainers. A stone lighter George wouldn't have got these rides. He also rarely rode for big trainers, he was fortunate to get in with Roger Charlton and most of his rides came from smaller yards. Yes he was a good jockey, but he wouldn't have had the connections or chances to be Champion.
