Regular readers of this forum would normally associate me with the 2 lay threads, although i occasionally back winners as well, in fact I remember the last one very well, it was quite possibly the best ride Scobie Breasley ever gave a horse.

Hopefully my attempt at humour is surpassed by efforts at race reading, but if i fail today, i guess there's always the X factor Laugh.

Note this is not going to be a regular thread, it's simply about a filly i quite like who's running at Beverley today.

Trying to find a winner in sprints at Beverley is difficult enough and the Hilary Needler Trophy for 2 year olds is no exception as it's often wide open. It used to be listed class, but doesn't attract the cream of young sprinters these days. I suspect Attraction was the best of them, but that's going back a few years.

I don't think Richard Fahey has ever won the race before, surprisingly enough being adept with sprinters and a 'local' (albeit born in Ireland) but i think that could change today as he runs two with reasonably good chances.

3.15 Beverley Good Tyne Girl

Best price on oddschecker : 7/1 (reduced due to a NR). 8.8 on here

Forget her debut run at Ripon, slowly away, ran green for almost 4f, wandered and looked around at times, and the penny didn't drop until the final furlong where she ran on well to be 3rd. The going was soft that may not have suited her.

The race was class 4 and she started at 11/1 so wasn't well fancied.

In her next race at Leicester on good to firm going, she had obviously learnt from the previous experience, and although only winning by 0.5L it was 5.5L back to the 3rd. The runner up let the form down LTO (2nd @ 2/5, beaten 0.5L) but the winner had the run of the race and she probably needs 6f anyway.

I sense that Richard Fahey had this race in mind for Good Tyne Girl early in the season. She's obviously speedy (sire won the Flying Childers and Molecomb) and ran at Leicester LTO, a galloping track similar in some respects to Beverley.

Paul Hanagan is on her stablemate, the shorter priced Kodyanna, but i wouldn't read too much into this, Paddy Mathers has ridden Good Tyne Girl in both her races.

She has the favoured number 1 stall and if she breaks well, could have a nice run on the rail, possibly making all.

Horse racing makes fools of the best of us sometimes, and it may well be she's simply an average sprinter and not good enough to win or even place today. She's meeting better rivals and has to improve, although there's every reason to think she will. At the odds i feel she's a reasonable choice and backed her already. If the market speaks in her favour at race time, i may back her again. Good luck.

I'm also hoping Tin Hat runs well in the preceding race (2.40) i feel he's better than the run LTO and is EW value @ 12/1.

Good luck, surely the favourite cannot win from 12

Personally I backed Dame Gladys last night.   Ryan had entries of Yousini and Dame Gladys for this race and stuck with the latter.  Good draw and I think will lead.  Hopefully take this en route to Queen Mary. 10/1 pretty generous.

Like Equine I had Dame Gladys and Wedding Date as the most likely winners, both well drawn, DG runs in the Guy Reed colours for a trainer with a good record in the race, think she'll step up on her first two runs, similarly Wedding Date ran in the rather rough National Stakes at Sandown last time and didn't get the best of runs, the booking of Dobbs is a negative for me given the way he has been riding, hoping that will see her drift to a more accommodating price throughout the morning.

Equine,

I totally agree with your comments ref the favourite, i'm surprised she's so low in the betting, and not sure she was the moral winner LTO anyway.

Good luck with your choice, it's a difficult race as we both know, and barring a couple, most are unexposed.

Cork,

Thanks for your input.

I remember the Guy Reed colours from bygone years, obviously resurrected since he passed away.

A very appropriate choice Andrew, I'm sure that you already know that today is the 158th Blaydon Races Day, Good Tyne Girl fits the bill nicely. Not sure if this is the race that Fahey ultimately has in mind for her for the season as she holds an entry in the Supersprint at Newbury next month. Could be a nice stepping stone?

Tiger Tiger,

I didn't have a clue it was the 158th Blaydon Races day, but i've heard the song of course. Isn't it a 'Toon Army' song ? My team Bristol City have a variant of the song.

I know it's associated with Newcastle, but i've only been there once and that was to the ferry ferminal many years ago.

When I saw the spelling i was curious if she was owned by anyone 'Newcastle' (Cheryl perhaps LOL) but it's Middleham.

My reasoning for thinking Fahey had this in mind for the filly back in time is the course is close to home, the slight uphill finish will suit her, and the field is often the speedy 5f type sprinters who are not quite Black type class (a few winners have been). It's also an easier race to win than the supersprint. I think she has a decent chance, but if she blew out and finished last, i wouldn't be shocked.

ashleigh,

WD, nice one.

Stablemate. Good Tyne Girl lost the race at the start. Threaded her way through, but too little, too late.
