the reality of the situation is that the betfair price near the off is available to most people's staking requirements and the 2 quid is available at the 66s |

The sad thing is that they will probably limit/ban anyone who backed it. I got banned from 5 bookies in one month by backing long shots. And with one bookie I had a single €2 e/w on a 50/1 shot, he placed and I got banned :D

I find it quite incredible that anyone would seek to back an outsider with a bookmaker.

There's a couple of reasons. 1. They expect the outsider to shorten in price. When I backed my 50/1 he finished second, and yet he didn't steam at all, but I think he should've. 2. some promo for extra place or whatever.

Betting hours before the off is often a risk not worth taking.

Yeah, now I'd back 20/1+ shots only at BSP. I got banned like 3 years ago and didn't yet know what crazy prices are people at betfair capable of laying. I would lay at 160 only if the horse had three legs.
