Franny Norton, the rider of ELEGIAC, appeared to ease his horse shortly before the winning post. After being interviewed and shown recordings of the incident, Norton explained that he never stopped riding and felt that he lost no momentum, and in his opinion, he had achieved his best possible placing, with the winner, KAANOON, finishing fast on his inside. i'd need to watch it again but im surprised if they enquire into a rider easing down they accept his version that he didn't

so he eased it down before the line (according to the stewards), got beaten a nostril.  but the stewards are happy he achieved his best possible placing.
