Used to be bus’s by the dozen in the middle but cancelled the barbecues etc.completely ruined it.CORPORATE CORPORATE CORPORATE.the aerial shot apart from the family enclosure looks empty.VERY SAD.

Rumoured John Batten would be attending ...
Frightened a fair few off. |

That oversized tent - at the last 30 yards, Winning Post, and beyond looks awful.
Definitely pitch too near the Rails - although probably deliberately. ![]() |

By:
Amazingly good photo of John in the Post. Was it ever shown on crimewatch onlooker or anyone ?

When Shergar won in 1981 the crowd was estimated at 500,000 that day, that ship has long since sailed.
|
|
By:
I was there 4 years ago.
Maybe 3, when Australia won. The bookies took a huge I mean huge overround 150 percent plus and couldn’t see much at all. All that being said, it’s free, odd. |

Maybe the Drug Dogs frightened everybody off.

Used to be 100 quid to take a coach on the hill, now it's 600 ! 10 years ago over 200 coaches , now less than 50.
|

By:
It did look a bit underpopulated yesterday at Epsom, and the number of buses was significantly down on previous years. What a shame! I do not like the marquees...just not in-keeping with The Derby.
|
|
By:
Chester gone the same, Used to be a band, loads of food and drink outlets, dozens of bookies. Due to the restrictions on alcohol and the management hating poor people it's a desert now.

Whenever the catering and entertainment at an event are taken in-house the enjoyment and ambience suffer without a doubt - only corporate benefits. This is similar to the townies with their loads of dosh buying up residences in a holiday town.

They showed a feature on Lester Piggott on ITV yesterday.
Old footage of Never Say Die - his first Derby Winner - and the likes of Nijinsky et al. The crowds were ENORMOUS - The in-field/Hill absolutely rammed - and on the Stands side, crowd almost back down to Tattenham corner. These tented villages for Corporate Hospitality - are nothing other than an eyesore. Somebody will probably invent a marquee in the future that bridges the course itself - with premium prices charged for the overhead view. |
|
By:
Was shocked how barren the centre of the course appeared. No doughnut van or shooting range.

|
By:
those ENORMOUS crowds would also have been on a wednesday afternoon - a working day ...
|
|
By:
A school day, too.

The corporates ought to be accommodated in a hot air balloon and made to stay up in the balloon for the entire duration of the meeting as they tend to be there mainly to be seen and contribute little, if at all, to the atmosphere and ambience of the meeting.
|
|
By:
Numbers and atmosphere a whole lot better than 10 years ago imo. I go every year and have noticed a huge improvement over the last 5 or so years. The addition of the funfair to the centre and new bars and food outlets to the grandstand area are very welcome. Loads of well dressed women now attend enjoying the day out. Well done Epsom. Heres to a weekend Derby/Oaks festival as soon as you can organise it - why run the Oaks on a day when 80% of your potential customers are at work ?

HELLO REGIT
, I STOOD ON THE HILL THIS YEAR PROBABLY FOR THE LAST TIME,EPSOM HAVE DONE A FANTASTIC JOB OF DRIVING PEOPLE AWAY,THE GREED OF THIS ORGANISATION HAS RESULTED IN THE HUNDREDS OF COACHES THAT USED TO FREQUENT THE HILL BEING REDUCED TO AROUND 50,EVERY YEAR EPSOM PRICE MORE AND MORE PEOPLE OUT.AS A BOOKMAKER I HAVE SEEN SLIPPAGE,TURNOVER,AND PROFIT DECLINE TO A LEVEL WERE ITS(FOR ME) NO LONGER VIABLE ![]() |
|
By:
'factmachine', I could not agree more. Even watching it on the box - I only live 3/4 miles away in Cheam - it was easy to see the numbers were down, and some bits of the course were underpopulated compared to previous; the character and ambience pf Derby Day have deteriorated.

ITS GOING TO BE INTERESTING TO SEE THAT WHEN THEY HAVE DRIVEN ALMOST EVERYONE AWAY (RACECOURSES IN GENERAL) BUT THE MEDIA RIGHTS MONEY FALLS DRAMATICALLY (REDUCTION IN FOBT STAKES) VIA PAYMENTS TO THE RACECOURSES,WHAT THEY WILL DO TO ENTICE THE PUBLIC BACK? I FEAR THE DAMAGE WILL BE DONE AND A FEW NEW HOUSING ESTATES MIGHT BE SPRINGING UP SOON

Facts difficult for you to say probs but how many "bookies" on the hill are shysters.
3/4 years ago i wanted 20 at 22/1 as shown, tried to trim it to 14s and hoping i wouldn't notice. (i had a can of lager in my hand) |
|
By:
DAMAGE HAS ALREADY BEEN DONE

ITSMESWADDLE,PROBABLY THE HIGHEST PERCENTAGE THAN ANYWHERE IF THE TRUTH BE KNOWN

By:
Thought so.
A shame on you real boys trying to bookmake. Presuming you take a risk. |
|
By:
THE TROUBLE IS THE EXPENSES ARE THAT GREAT,ITS FOR SOME THE ONLY WAY THEY CAN RECOUP THEIR OUTLAY,AND SO THE DOWNWARD SPIRAL CONTINUES!

BOOKMAKERS THAT STAND HORSES ARE NOW IN MINORITY AND HAVE BEEN FOR THE LAST 10 YEARS,FACT!

I have bet with my local independent for the last 12 years he tells me the same |

HILLS.CORALS,LADS AND BETFRED,ALL PAY A LOT LESS FOR DATA/PICTURES THAN SINGLE INDEPENDENTS,NOT A LEVEL PLAYING FIELD,THE ONLY REASON OUR SHOP LASTED SO LONG IS UNLIKE THE FOUR BLUFFERS ABOVE WE WOULD TAKE A BET WITHOUT PHONING THE POLICE,AND NO ONE EVER GOT RESTRICTED OR MONITORED,FACT!

correct me if im wrong but people on the hill are not paying customers so how does the numbers affect racing?most of what is on the hill attracts all the sort of people who would go to the opening of an envelope if it meant getting pissed.few years ago they had a 'music' stage, and i use the word 'music' loosely, attracted mostly teenage hoodies who coudn't care less about horseracing who started fighting just like the p1kies who frequent the hill.good ridance
|
|
By:
THE MAJORITY OF THE CROWD ON THE HILL ARRIVE BY TRANSPORT,WHICH HAVE TO PAY ON ENTRANCE TO THE HILL AREA.
