Used to be 100 quid to take a coach on the hill, now it's 600 ! 10 years ago over 200 coaches , now less than 50.

It did look a bit underpopulated yesterday at Epsom, and the number of buses was significantly down on previous years. What a shame! I do not like the marquees...just not in-keeping with The Derby.
Report georgebakerfanclub June 3, 2018 10:20 AM BST
Chester gone the same, Used to be a band, loads of food and drink outlets, dozens of bookies. Due to the restrictions on alcohol and the management hating poor people it's a desert now.
Report impossible123 June 3, 2018 3:16 PM BST
Whenever the catering and entertainment at an event are taken in-house the enjoyment and ambience suffer without a doubt - only corporate benefits. This is similar to the townies with their loads of dosh buying up residences in a holiday town.
Report onlooker June 3, 2018 4:21 PM BST
They showed a feature on Lester Piggott on ITV yesterday.

Old footage of Never Say Die - his first Derby Winner - and the likes of Nijinsky et al.

The crowds were ENORMOUS - The in-field/Hill absolutely rammed - and on the Stands side, crowd almost back down to Tattenham corner.

These tented villages for Corporate Hospitality - are nothing other than an eyesore.

Somebody will probably invent a marquee in the future that bridges the course itself - with premium prices charged for the overhead view.

The corporates ought to be accommodated in a hot air balloon and made to stay up in the balloon for the entire duration of the meeting as they tend to be there mainly to be seen and contribute little, if at all, to the atmosphere and ambience of the meeting.
Report lordnoise June 3, 2018 9:12 PM BST
Numbers and atmosphere a whole lot better than 10 years ago imo. I go every year and have noticed a huge improvement over the last 5 or so years. The addition of the funfair to the centre and new bars and food outlets to the grandstand area are very welcome. Loads of well dressed women now attend enjoying the day out. Well done Epsom. Heres to a weekend Derby/Oaks festival as soon as you can organise it - why run the Oaks on a day when 80% of your potential customers are at work ?

I used to go horse racing regularly but not any more - no value for money - not even Derby Day (being in Epsom) unless to show friends (professionals and mainly foreigners) from the other side of London an experience of the ambience. Derby day is the biggest event on the flat - forget Royal Ascot, it's for the toffs - and the flagship of Flat racing.

Well behaved non-payers eg families with kids, etc, assist in creating the right atmosphere too; corporate boxes less likely cos' only there to mingle and network, and unlikely regulars in the future.

Corporate profits are all that matter to those in power and the wealthy. Train companies are not run to provide a service to the population they are

run to maximise profits. The NHS will eventually be the same. Banks are not there to serve the needs of the population they exist solely to further

stuff the pockets of the rich. Race courses are only interested in keeping their shareholders happy .The racing is secondary.

Radical changes in thinking throughout society would be necessary before anything changes for the better of the general public.

Those in power will never let that happen and the general public have become so brainwashed that a revolution is beyond the realms of possibility.

The intention of the Racecourses is that they are going to do that, collectively,  with BRITBET - which will be OWNED by ALL the Racecourses.

The upside for them being - Britbet will be Pool betting - so a guaranteed 'rake-off' - and no potential liabilities - even at SP  minus 10%.

Britbet as a stand alone - Course bets only - is, of course, a vulnerable entity - and that is why it is 1.01 that Britbet will amalgamate with the existing Tote Pools - those, and consequently Britbets's, Pools being potentially boosted by the outside investment that Fred has secured.

Interesting times ahead.
