Sky Sports is adding a channel dedicated to horse racing to its portfolio which will also include coverage from Chester and Bangor.

Adding to the individual sport channels launched in 2017, Sky Sports Racing will replace At The Races and will be available to all Sky TV customers in the United Kingdom and Ireland at no added cost.

The channel will be available in HD for the first time and be produced from Sky Studios in West London, featuring live coverage of over 650 fixtures in the United Kingdom as well as high-quality exclusive international race meetings.

To add to the channel's list of courses ahead of launch, a 10-year deal with Chester Race Company has been signed to bring coverage from Chester - the oldest racecourse in the UK - and Bangor-on-Dee from March 2019.

Chester's highlights include the Boodles May meeting, which saw the subsequent winners of the Derby, Oaks, King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes and the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe all racing in 2017.

Managing Director of Sky Sports Barney Francis said: "We've seen a great reaction from our customers to launching dedicated sports channels and this takes us to another level.

"Horse racing is a massive sport that Sky has been involved in for two decades, now we will have a channel to give our customers more of what they love every day.

"Adding Chester and Bangor-on-Dee is fantastic news and we look forward to making Sky Sports Racing a new home for racing fans."

Chester Race Company chief executive Richard Thomas said: "We're delighted to announce this new deal and long-term partnership. We believe it secures a positive and exciting future for Chester and Bangor-on-Dee Racecourses and fits squarely with our values and ambitions.

"We know Sky Sports will move the dial in the way our racing is covered but more than that we are excited by the prospect of how we can communicate and promote racing and the Chester brand further.

"We see real value in what the partnership can bring across TV, digital and social media, for us and for our sponsor partners. There is a lot of crossover between our core audiences and an opportunity to extend our reach more broadly via the Sky family of channels including Sky Sports News. We will be working very closely with the teams at Sky Sports and ATR in what will be a genuinely collaborative relationship."

At The Races chief executive Matthew Imi added: "We very much look forward to working with Richard and his excellent teams at Chester and Bangor-on-Dee.

"The Boodles May Festival at Chester is a true highlight of the UK racing calendar and both tracks are very well supported and respected within the industry as well as being truly progressive in their outlook.

"Also, there is no better home for our new channel production facility than Sky Sports' studios which are the best in the business and we believe Sky Sports Racing is set to be a game changer for racing. Later this year we look forward to presenting our plans in more detail to the major constituents in our sport and racing fans more generally."

Sky Sports Racing, the eleventh dedicated sports channel, will be available on TV and on mobile through Sky GO for the first time, allowing customers to watch the channel in ways that suit them.

I don't see why anyone should be paying extra for this channel, SKY or Virgin. The Irish meetings are lost so you would be effectively paying extra for a lot less. No thank you. Thanks to RUK, racing is already ridiculously expensive compared to other sports.

Serves RUK right if they lose more courses, their contempt for their subscribers know no bounds.
Report The Pies April 30, 2018 6:26 PM BST
As I understand it, RUK is the collective name for the tracks that they show. Imagine they'd be happy to jack it in if Sky offered then enough ££ to move. More likely that Sky would cherry pick the ones they want so big tracks would be ok and Jockey Club could probably agree a deal for all of theirs (big and small).

yes RUK might struggle to retain a good few of their courses which could have a big effect on their business plan.incidentally does anyone know why the rights to the irish racing are sold en bloc instead of the courses negotiating individually.
Report onlooker May 1, 2018 3:36 PM BST
Perhaps that question should be directed  at the Board Members of the IHRB - Irish Horse Racing Board.

No doubt your enquiry will be bounced - as they could be too busy with the envelopes.
Report RoyalAcademy May 1, 2018 5:28 PM BST
As I understand it, the Irish rights are owned by SIS until 2023 and they have done the deal with RUK. AIR (assoc of Irish racecourses) had a possible veto but voted in favour as the cash was attractive. HRI also have an input to media rights deal as they receive 15% (?) of all cash, said to be upwards of €40m per annum-this seems a massive figure and allows a largely unaccountable body (individual racecourses) to do as it pleases with the cash (no prizemoney contributions, for example)?

One of the points made in favour of the change from ATR to RUK was the possibility of a new sub from ATR-this is clearly not happening now with move to SKY.

Question: does it matter one iota if Irish racing loses its audience in Ireland as long as the tracks are rewarded. The game is funded from Government coffers mostly regardless of the nonsense spoken about punters funding the Irish game. Bookmakers pay 1% tax but this does not fund the game as the tax goes to general exchequer funds.

I haven't got RUK but I occasionally watch Bf LV from their tracks. I was trying to follow Altior's race at Sandown on Sat and was totally distracted when they split the screen to show some minor flat race from Haydock. The picture was much better from the latter course and totally ruined the Sandown race. God knows how they will manage with the Irish stuff added.

The Yanks know how to do racing TV.

I subscribe to RTN. $15 per month and no term conditions.ie. you can renew or not each month. After logging in there is a menu listing every race

track running and so you can watch whatever one you want. You get the race track's live feed, most of them in HD.(Churchill Downs, excluded but

that's CD for you).

No presenters babbling on ,no ads and thorough viewing of the horses.
