tbf Sunday In Augusta was generally 50/1 at 1040 this morning with a lot of bookmakers

I'm surprised it was 50's earlier. A small field, bumper, no stand out fav, heavy going etc. It's not as though the horse has a lot of form to discount it.

In fairness to bookies - if (and its a big if) I'd allowed some chunky bets pass then shouting about it and shining a bright light on any dubious riding / running in a 4 runner family ties / amateurs last race is probably a good tactic.

Thought it looked the most likely winner 3 out but 1.3 was short enough.

there were 2 gambles in the race late one on fav and mullins was a drifter all day, no way was that horse ever going to  be allowed to win even if good enough,bit like the one in the 2nd race trebling in price,the pikeys in mullins yard rarely get it wrong when laying the eyeballs out of the shorties

its a billion pound operation ran like a flapping yard

such are the red alerts these days it wouldnt take much to trigger the alarm bells...but £20ew bets could probably be obtained...mart would get £100ew easily.

you'd obv have many people placing bets...im highly scepitcal but at 500/1 wudnt needed fortunes on.

All the firms slavishly follow BF prices, so in these days of low liquidity in the early markets, even a £10 bet at 20's slaughters the price on BF and it halves and is quickly followed by the big firms who go under the odds at 8's. This alerts those who supposedly follow the money and the snowball effect starts. 8's on BF = 6's in the shops etc., etc.,

So what happens these days, as was evidenced by the David Evans cosy relationship with Ladcrooks. When a family with the name Mullins and their high roller owners wants to bet, they are readily accommodated to decent money and this is fed through the firms outside "the insider bookies"..... the one thing they do not do is blow their cover by backing them on BF Exchange early and spoiling the price.

When the exchange markets (win & place) become viable at around 15 minutes before the race, it is only then that any money is bet on BF, with a view to making a margin on the lay side ... ie bet at 3/1 and laid back at evs or shorter in running to give a win/win profit scenario, even with premium charges.

So it is not all one-sided, the favoured bookies are in the know and have to pay a little for the privilege, but they can offset their liabilities through the trade and also make a profit.....plus there are many "Mug" accounts (pro footballers, playboys etc., with more money than sense and with losing accounts) who can also be persuaded to get plenty on as a favour.

The fancy 50/1, 40/1 , 33/1 prices, if backed at all, would have been for peanuts, the real money was at 10/1 into 5/1 and caused the prices to shrink within minutes.

As we have all experienced and heard of, if Joe Bloggs suddenly wants a lumpy bet, he is referred to traders and is offered a silly amount to go away and if he manages to win on the horses or dogs consistently his account is closed ... but don't think that applies to everyone .... if you are in with the right crowd, there are ways and means.

i'll concede a known mug/loser would be accommodated...a strange face wouldnt.

Bookmakers breathed a huge sigh of relief on a wet and dreary but far from mundane Monday evening at Tramore, avoiding six-figure payouts when the second half of a plunge went astray.

Victory for Tornado Watch, owned and trained by Emmet Mullins, sparked high hopes of a string of big-priced doubles being landed, but the defeat of Sunday At Augusta in the bumper meant bookmakers avoided a battering.

Tornado Watch was a best priced 16-1 earlier in the day and was returned the 11-4 second favourite, while market confidence behind Sunday At Augusta was even stronger.

The Stephen Murphy-owned Sunday At Augusta started the day as big as 50-1 but was sent off a 5-2 shot. However, while he ran well, he could not match 6-4 favourite Cuneo – owned by Gigginstown and trained by Henry de Bromhead – in the closing stages and finished second.

Paddy Power, who were by no means best-priced about either, were among the firms that would have been bowled over, with the double available with them at 532-1 early in the day.

'It will take our pants down'

Speaking after the first half of the double had been landed, their spokesman Paul Binfield said: "Punters have come for the double. We were 40-1 about Sunday At Augusta and he's now 15-8 [after the first winner].

"We've seen a few singles for Sunday At Augusta, but it's mainly the double and it will take our pants down. It's over six figures."

Commenting after Sunday At Augusta had been beaten, Binfield added: "That was squeaky bum time and we're a trifle relieved."

'Nothing we can't cope with'

For Coral, David Stevens, speaking before Sunday At Augusta’s defeat, said: "These are races that we would typically trade carefully when the market was first up, and while we laid a couple of bets on the double early doors it was nothing of any great note, and clearly at the bigger prices available earlier it takes only a small amount to build up liabilities.

"While there is always a snowball effect to these things, it doesn't appear we're on the end of a widespread coup; obviously if both legs win there will be some winning punters, but nothing we can't cope with."

Mullins, who is part of the famous family dynasty headed by Ireland's reigning champion trainer Willie, is in his third season with a licence.

Speaking earlier in the day when phoned about the gamble, Mullins said: "I haven't had any money on it anyway, I don't know any more about it than you do.

"You're the one telling me about the gamble, I don't know anything about it."

Asked again if he had been involved in the gamble after Tornado Watch had won, the trainer replied: "Thank god he won."

i found out something last week I had a winning bet went to collect casher said nothing on that so went to other shop same nothing to come phoned up customer services he asked for number on bottom of ticket a few seconds he had bet in front of him hold on a few mins later - if you go back into shop you will now be paid. That technology they use now can detect any gamble unless its all put on at the exact same time I didn't realise how sophisticated it had become silly me

SO people were putting a 50 to 1 shot in a double but not backing it in a single as well.most days faces backing 50 to 1 shots into 15 to 8 would be considered a huge gamble landed,without already landing a 16,s touch, double would just be the icing on the cake

presume they were backing the 2nd one each-way with the 5 runners but all paddy had to do was pick the phone up and voila, Sweat Equity (reduction factor 0.3%) had started 'coughing'.  of course it had ....  rules mean any e/w bets struck reverted to win only.

first time visor pp said a six figure sum.rest assured if it was over 200k they would have said that.so a six figure sum would equate to a 200e double at the opening prices.i done a bet before cheltenham and the masters that would have netted me  over 300k.it cost 45 euro but i didnt see  any headlines over that?!?!?
