A number of reasons imo
1) The over-emphasis on Cheltenham and its expansion 2) Trainers treating their horses with kid gloves 3) Mainly for hurdlers the proliferation of a/w racing. That's a start. |

I only came across this haydock fixture as I was doing some research on mole board looking further when he was backed into 7/4 fav for the 1988 sun alliance hurdle the race was won by rebel song who had won at Warwick on a quiet Thursday in February on that same Warwick card the 88 sun alliance chase winner also won.

My favourite midweek surprise from that era - Miinnehoma beating Mutare and Danny Harold in a three grand novice chase at Chepstow on a Tuesday in January 1992. Mutare had won the Grade 1 Feltham on Boxing, Danny Harrold beat Jodami by 15 lengths in the Reynoldstown two weeks later (also run midweek) and Miinnehoma won the Sun Alliance beating Bradbury Star on his next start.

It wasn’t that long ago ribero the Towton novice chase was ran at a midweek wetherby fixture a good crowd on a cold day watching mr mulligan beat call it a day

Some great names and memories. Having worked for Pitman & O'Neill in the early 90's I would of worked around Danny Harald & Garrison Savannah. Also worked with Danny Connors who unfortunately was killed as a chaser, Tony Dobbin was claiming & devastated after riding him that day.
Another link to a horse I rode with kid gloves was Vicario Di Bray who beat Celtic Shot the year he won the champion if memory serves. I recall after lots of leg trouble we had him ready to go novice chasing after lots of swimming. On the day of his intended chase debut he stepped out of his box lame, the ramp was down in lorry & he was last to load. Don't think he ever saw a track again. |

Haydock used to have 3 midweek Wednesday meetings in Nov and Dec then and no Saturday meetings. Virtually every meeting was full of future festival winners. Just one midweek Wednesday meeting remains now and its a very average card. Like everything else the other 2 have been moved to a Saturday.

Very good memories of vicario de bray winning at haydock his next race he was sent of odds on in the tote gold trophy probably the scweepes back then and was beaten by grey something

As someone pointed out on an thread a while ago, the irony is that the midweek dross is served up in front of aficionados whilst the better class racing is put on in front of crowds where a significant proportion couldn't care a flying fig what's running.

Kildimo beat Desert Orchid in the Jim Ford in 1988, but that was at level weights - both carried 11-11.
Sabin Du Loir beat him there in the race named after him in 1991, but that was also at level weights. |

I remember going to aintree on the Friday to see kildimo and Dessie run there was only a small crowd back then but everyone there was interested in the horses now the Friday of aintree is mobbed with people having little or no interest in the horses.

Another great occasion was the day Baracouda turned up one Monday at Fontwell. Place was absolutely buzzing that day
