The eagerly awaited reappearance of Champion Hurdler Faugheen after nearly 2 years off presents a chance to Back/lay at short odds, some may say that this is the type of bet that Betfair was designed for!
Looking for clues about this event is rather difficult a bit like picking holes in Arkles form! For me any horse that returns after nearly 2 years off following an injury has to be worth taking on, especially when he returns in a hot race against in form rivals including another former Champion hurdler. I'd happily lay Faugheen at 4/9-1/2 in the doubt that he can return on absolute top form. The only time he's been beaten was after a 6 month break when being beaten by Nichols Canyon in this race 2 years ago at 1/6 and wouldn't appear to have run to anywhere near his best when beating Blue Fashion(whatever happened to him) in the Ascot hurdle after 7 months off in 2014.
Yes very small chinks in his armour and wouldn't be too upset if he returns in top form and wins.

I do think it's a good thing..when it was beat in this last year they rode the wrong race on it...better from the front so hope to see it lead these.

i have layed him for a smallish amount so far at around 1.49, long lay off from a tendon injury iirc , how hard can they push him on the gallops ? is he the horse he was when push comes to shove ? elliots campeador is a young up and comer who has a fair  bit to find but age on his side ,plus jezki no mug ,faugheen may well win easily but at the odds andf with the doubts ill take him on !

Even at his best I don't think he ever really measured up to the hype. Hype led by the clown that is Chapman.

I don't think he would beat the current Champion Hurdler but here he is taking on an upgraded handicapper and a horse who was never supposed to appreciate soft ground.

Just a race to watch.

Kriskin,  I think it is fair to question how good he is.   He won the worst neptune line up ever, and in his champion hurdle wins in uk and ireland has he usually beats artic fire.

Obviously, he can only beat what is in front of him, which to dates has not been much.

Once Swamp Fox mysteriously allowed him a very easy lead it was effectively game over. The second favourite isn't anywhere near Champion Hurdle class and on that ground neither is Jezki.

If I was JP I would be sorting out a pacemaker to make life a lot trickier for the old boy. Very generous of William Hill to push Buveur D'Air out to 5/1 as he should still be favourite.
Report workrider November 19, 2017 5:48 PM GMT
Cardiffc, I had a good look at him today in the parade ring and he was tight enough for this.
Report howarth31 November 19, 2017 6:13 PM GMT
He's been on the go all summer, so unlikely to come on for this and Buveur D'Air's champion hurdle was run in the exactly same time as Faugheen's 2015 win and being 10 it's unlikely he'll get back to that level while Buveur could easily improve again and yet he's double the price
Report cardifffc November 19, 2017 6:38 PM GMT
work.....I only saw him on TV and  I can tell you I am no judge of a racehorse......I thought he looked a bit tubby but with the long absence it makes sense to have pretty straight....I know you go racing a fair bit so your opinion is far more likely to be right than mine
Report workrider November 19, 2017 7:06 PM GMT
He was fairly straight today, but he would still improve make no mistake.
Report firstimevisor November 19, 2017 7:21 PM GMT
That was some performance today. I'd be wary of a bounce run at Christmas but he will hack up in the Champion Hurdle if he stays sound.

Differentdrum, Swamp Fox is rated 155 to Faugheen's 176. He didn't allow him an easy lead...in fact i'd say SF has never gone as fast in his life. He just about had enough energy to jump the last.
As for JP using a pacemaker to beat Faugheen -why and how would that work given that Faugheen stays 3 miles?
Report differentdrum November 19, 2017 9:11 PM GMT
Swamp Fox is a winner on the Flat and could surely have matched Faugheen in the early stages had he so wished but it seems they decided not get competitive and just take the place money.

Given Faugheen's run style a pacemaker would be in there to take him out of his comfort zone. It would also put far more pressure on his jumping. Nothing to do with stamina. Everyone knows you don't want to concede an easy lead.

Why didn't Faugheen hack up in the 2015 Champion Hurdle? Presumably, he was somewhere near his peak. He had the run of the race but still only managed to beat Arctic Fire by a diminishing length and a half. The second was given a less than inspired ride.

Three years on is he likely to be better than that relatively underwhelming performance? I think he needs to be. Factor in his fragility and he looks a poor price. It is also pretty obvious which one out of Faugheen and Buveur D'Air is likely to improve.
Report Diff-rent November 19, 2017 9:48 PM GMT
Dare I ask how many champion hurdles are won by 10 yr old ?

Good performance today but the ground won't be the same come March hopefully.
Report firstimevisor November 19, 2017 9:56 PM GMT
If swamp fox had gotten any more competitive early on he just wouldn't have finished. He was legless as it was.

WPM would love it if something else made the running for Faugheen. The faster they go the better for him. He can be dropped in if needs be - he only makes the running because the others cannot go fast enough for him.

Faugheen's Champion was a cracking renewal. Arctic Fire was a hell of a horse at that time before injury (he won the County Hurdle this year off top weight on his first run for 14 months). The Fly was third, he was getting old but still won 3 grade 1s that season. Jezki and The New One were next and both were 7 yo and in their prime and Faugheen trounced them. Buveur D'air beat the 10 yo My Tent who is a good horse but in his prime was almost identical in ability to Jezki and The New One. Buveur Dair will need to improve, and improve a lot, to handle Faugheen.
Report Vubiant November 19, 2017 9:57 PM GMT
Faugheen will be a fresh 10 y o with small mileage on the clock.

To be honest 10 yr olds shouldn't be winning champion hurdles.

Hope they retire the horse now and do the right thing. Faugheen doesn't owe any gambler a thing.

Many on here think a 10 yr can win a champion hurdle. History proves different.

I remember a top trainer saying... Each championship race (group 1 flat ) leaves a mark on a horse.

Like all sports.

The horse has had its day. One too many races.

Retire the horse and stop taking punters hard earned cash.

The mystery of Faugheen, my take on it was that he was not wanted last time, seemed to have be waiting for his stablemate to come passed.
There is form on this when beaten by stablemate Nicholas Canyon and then bounced back, let's see and observe...

This with my humble opinion is why bookies and layers win. Because everyone has a view.

But take some advice from someone who's seen some top horses. Rarely do they comeback.
