Davy Russell has been cautioned for the incident at Tramore last Friday where he appeared to punch Kings Dolly.

A Turf Club inquiry held before racing at Killarney on Saturday determined there would be no further punishment for the rider over the incident this month when he appeared to strike his mount Kings Dolly on the head.

Russell was foolish in the action he took, but, we must realise a lot worse happens 'at home',  be it horses or working dogs there is a need to use discipline especially during the training process.

It's not in doubt. Remember the piece on ATR a while back showing him and the other jocks in the sauna. Only person I ever saw using it as a shower with him rubbing what looked like soap on himself.

This is how Irish authorities like to deal with all controversary,,ignore for as long  as possible, then take minimum  action and hope everybody  will forget about it soon.

Shame he doesn't always show so much effort (as his punch) when he's actually riding horses in a race....

Shouldn't have been swept aside, a smack yes, head-punching no. Deserved a reprimand, probably 14 - 28 day ban, this looked awful on TV and it damages the sport. Great jockey, but he punched a horse quite forcefully on the head, and Russell didn't even get a clip round the ear. Not the correct decision, but move on, worse has happened.....

I'm surprised he didn't get a token ban. Perhaps he threatened legal action.

The Irish Turf Club are a spineless lot; punching a horse in the head only warrants a caution? They should be ashamed of themselves, and wholly unprofessional, ill-informed and out of touch  with the public, in my opinion.

Sadly, no surprise. Racing clears its own. I don't even know why they waste time with this sort of thing as jockey's never receive anything like a realistic reprimand. Just a sham.

Maybe the RSPCA could be asked for their opinion on this decision by the ITC. Totally absurd, no other desription for it.

While I appreciate what he did in the circumstances was reprehensible I wouldn't want the RSPCA to comment on anything regarding horseracing.

MJK,
Rubbing shampoo on your skin whilst in a sauna increases sweating, which is why they do it.

This was an uncalled-for and clear mistreatment of a horse in public by an experienced and senior jockey; horse racing does not come into the equation. This was a despicable behaviour which warranted an equitable punishment. Maybe Mr Russell could offer his head to the horse.....

Cheers for that, didn't see anyone else do it though. And not very hygenic for anyone else there is it. Like someone having a shave while in there.
