There is some female performing after racing and the tickets to get into the racecourse proper are more expensive than usual and I presume the place will be full of drunken young people with no interest in the racing. They have lost this customer.
Tbh I did go to a Southwell " Family Fun " day a week or two ago as I went with some friends who are still working. I could cope with that as the prices didn't seem to be inflated and the odd noisy kid was bearable ( I'm not THAT grumpy ) but if going on my own I was hoping I would be OK for proper racing at the smaller courses in midweek. I'm blowed if I am paying an extra £10 or so to pay some has-been to perform.

The racecourses have realised that there is more money in the people who want to go to the races for a night out and to spend plenty on drink than those actually interested in the racing. That's fine for them but it doesn't increase interest in the sport as a whole.

Sophie is tbf not a has-been as she stills sells records ( Wiki ) but to me she is a never was. I'm not even clear that she is singing ( possibly a good thing ) as apparently she has married some DJ and they may just be "spinning" whatever that means. I am a bit tempted anyway. I keep meaning to go to race meetings this summer but the weather always turns bad. Delta is quite right that I am not a regular but I meant to become a semi ( so to speak) while my health holds. Talking of which I hope onlooker isn't being filthy

Salmon what ever gave you the impression that the place will be full of drunken yobs? 'come racing'this is the reason to stay well away from racecourses when a 'concert' is on http://www.wigantoday.net/news/police-hunt-woman-following-haydock-park-as
I am most unhappy to report that according to the BBC it's going to start raining around 5.00PM and then will p*ss it down for the rest of the evening. What a shame.

Sorry kenbo. Missed your point about the centre of the course but I would guess there will be no cover except in the bar and I don't drink during the day,few bookies and definitely no access to the parade ring. Bit like a 3rd class rail carriage.
