I actually wondered why he kept improving his position only to drop back to the rear again. Did something similar the other week and never put the horse in the race. I thought the same was happening. WTF are you on about....fav hobby?

I personally hate rides like that, obv had about a stone in hand but a bad mistake somewhere he woulda looked very stupid, Derek O connor rides the same, horrible to watch the pair of them but loved by the majority apparently.

wouldnt have said it had a stone in hand, the jolly looked to be going better turning in imo. did it well though in the end, so i suppose thats all that matters in the end

But in Ireland you never know how hard they're trying to win!

Do you have to point out your anti Irish views on every thread you post in?

In Ireland the best horse usually wins.Just a matter of spending time looking at they form.Codd is one of the best jockeys in Ireland and always uses his head.

Does the best horse win when it's one of those left 25 lengths at the start (i.e. half the field often)?

Each to their own but my opinion along with CR is the Irish form generally stands up.

The type of horse you are saying that is left 25lths at the start, generally would still have no hope even if given a 25lths start.

The "bad press" Irish racing gets on here isn't justified and i think it usually comes from bad punters in general.

agree totally pa.a few stupid throwaway comments appear from time to time..they never see the slowly away, ran wide, trouble in running ones that finish 5th or 6th around the sand tracks that suddenly when the money is down magically do everything right?!?!?

Fair few of those types generally (not that it's only Ireland where that happens of course sometimes the English jumps courses, but Ireland at times ridiculous for it surely).

I like the way some are trying to justify that it's fine to allow 25 length handicaps (deliberate from jockeys/trainers) - says it all!

I'm not trying to justify anything Stu,i am saying it as i honestly see it,your change of tack is noticeable though as you have now just named "handicaps" only, the maidens as you know were a slippery slope.
Of course they are are non-jiggers(we all know the colours of the biggest culprit),but i think tou will be hard pressed to give recent examples of "half the field giving 25lths" in a handicap.

I was meaning 'handicaps' in terms of ground given up - 25 lengths might be an exaggeration on average, but the main point is horses essentially left with practically no winning chance from the off/shortly after (one pet hate those left with huge amounts of ground, but the jocks sit motionless) - that has to be wrong in any racing?
(BTW, I'm not saying these races in Ireland are the only dodgy ones in racing of course, just for this specific issue)

Apologies for picking that up wrong, a maiden hurdle in Ireland these days more often than not have a Mullins/Elliott runner who is very likely rated 125+,the majority of the field are 90ish rated whose "gold cup" comes further down the line at the likes of Wexford,Downpatrick, etc, the simple fact is they aren't good enough.
Whether they get hard races and are then handicapped out of anything in the future by proximity to a high rated horse, would be a fair enough point, that could be balanced by they are generally young, inexperienced horses just trying to learn their trade by getting an education without getting an aversion to racing.I believe that in most cases.

I agree pa lapsy. In a maiden hurdle in Ireland only 2 or 3 horses in the field can possible win it.The handicapper will not antomaticly give a mark after 3 runs if he is not sure of the horses ability.

Most of the ones not trying in maiden hurdles are just rubbish, but there are plenty of horses who should be trying but aren't. Take Presenting Percy, rated 156 after his Cheltenham win but finished behind a horse rated 99 on hurdle debut. Took great bumper form into that race too. Mall Dini was the same, beaten 31 and 56 lengths on his first 2 hurdle starts. And what about Heartbreak City?
