in the Trials?

I mean seriously, this day in age, why give a horse a hard race days before the main event, Aidan (the race record holder) didn't!

Frankel had a trial.
Report geoff m May 6, 2017 3:57 PM BST
No left it out in the centre of the course
Report GEORGE.B May 6, 2017 3:57 PM BST
That was just to get the fizz out of him so he'd be more settled at HQ!
Report pa lapsy May 6, 2017 3:59 PM BST
I would have thought it may be advantageous to have a run albeit not wanting a particulary hard race.
Barney's slight stumble and not quite a clear run for a fraction could have made it very close if all went right for him imo.
Report GEORGE.B May 6, 2017 4:02 PM BST
You have to learn from the masters imo, and Aidan doesn't give his main Guineas contender a hard race two or so weeks before the main event, so why do other trainers do it, do they think Aidan doesn't know what he's doing?!
Report asparagus May 6, 2017 4:03 PM BST
Barney ran equally well today imo. change the rides and you may well change the result.
Report TheFear May 6, 2017 4:03 PM BST
barney ran a blinder
Report carstairs May 6, 2017 4:04 PM BST
Tactics determined the outcome, nothing else.
Report McCoy Carp May 6, 2017 4:04 PM BST
Why bother with trials then?
Report tyred May 6, 2017 4:06 PM BST
trials are just so Aidan knows which horses are the danger.
Report geoff m May 6, 2017 4:17 PM BST
George Barney and Eminent had to have a race due to lack of experience
Cant recall Aiden bringing a strongly fancied runner to the Guineas on the back of 1 solitary maiden win
Report TheFear May 6, 2017 4:21 PM BST
the trials were too close to the big race, as someone pointed out a few weeks back
Report OliasOfSunhillow May 6, 2017 6:55 PM BST
I got the felling they did not go that quick, perhaps someone who has studied the fractions could confirm. If so then it would not have suited Eminent
Report smokey1919 May 6, 2017 8:01 PM BST
both the fav and barny ran to form , fav beat rivit 3.5 len and barney beat same horse 1.5
the stables rider gifting the fav the rail also helped today imo !

Car stairs is right....the others followed Coolmore's lead....
Report wallis May 6, 2017 8:53 PM BST
Barney was unfortunate to take a dodgy step 2f out but apart from that it was down to Coolmores tactics. They got Churchill a free run up the rail and then Donncha moved out and deliberately came across Barney and the French horse to ensure the result.
Report BornToWin May 6, 2017 9:01 PM BST
They talk (usually of NH Horses) about the 'bounce' factor after a lay off.

Barney ran a blinder in the Greenham, and with just 2 weeks rest before this toughest of assignments he ran another blinder.

Hopefully some big days ahead for him.

Barney Roy ran his race. Eminent just not good enough.
Report GEORGE.B May 6, 2017 10:52 PM BST
It looked like Barney put in a huge effort to run down the Godolphin horse in the Greenham, wonder if that just took the edge of him enough today, say a length or two?

Mind, not sure how anyone can say Barney ran his race, we simply don't know enough about the horse after just 3 starts.

Now take his demeanour, switched off nicely at Newbury and saw his race out strongly, but today, looked a bit jig-joggy at the start and took a grip in the race itself. Nervous energy after a big effort in the Greenham?

To be fair, I suppose if you have only a maiden win to your horse's name, a trainer will feel the need to run such a horse in a trial in order to justify running in a Classic.
Report doantwin2easy May 6, 2017 11:58 PM BST
I'd have thought the bigger factors today were that Barney needs a pace to aim at, and everyone and their cat seemed to know that Eminent will need further against the top notchers.

Churchill was ideally positioned up in the van to use his 7f speed, so when he quickened off a slow pace on and got the rail run, it was pretty much game over.
Report wallis May 7, 2017 12:01 AM BST
Personally I dont get all the plaudits for Churchill.  It was a slowly run race , the AOB camp let Churchill drop out and follow the pacemaker and then use it as a blocker to keep in front of the main dangers.  About halfway Heffernan slows on Spirit of Valor to allow Moore to come to the rail. Then at the cut away the other AOB runner drifts out and Donncha swerves left and right in front of Barney to allow Churchill to get away with a clear run

Now Churchill has had all that in its favour plus Barney Roy stumbling two out and still only won by a length.

well said, churchill smashes into barney at the start. look at the start again
Report gibs May 7, 2017 11:23 PM BST
spot on wallis...i don't think churchill will ever finish in front of Barney again...mind you , its job done with Churchill tbf..
Report Racingqueen May 8, 2017 12:18 AM BST
couldnt believe I was listening to the 5hit peddled by John Ferguson today over why a pacemaker wasn't put in for Barney Roy.....stating because he took a few strides to warm up in the greenham, they were worried, he wouldn't be able to go a quick pace if running a PMer....

This horse was off the bridle a furlong out and was going away at the line. He can clearly go the pace(Fresh and green when out of the gates in the greenham.) but with his stride either wants a strong pace or to front run. Coolmore must laugh at what an amateur outfit they are...
